I am contemplating retrofiting an older style Instrument Cluster into my 2017 V, to match my 2013 V. My 2017 V is quite different, as it has the "multi info display". It might not be possible, but I have researched part numbers for the IC on the various Prius Vs.

The used clusters themselves are surprisingly cheap ~$60. I find this surprising, because I want the "voice command" switch off of the steering wheel, and I am finding that part much more expensive.

What I don't have is photos to show the differences. This is particularly interesting, as the FaceLift (2015+) models had two very different Instrument Clusters. The dealer sites have notoriously bad drawings of the parts. Googling the part numbers show eBay auctions, where the ICs are not lit up.

That is where I would like help. Help can be a photo of your Prius V IC, with the year and trim level. A description of the various parts would help. Also helpful would be scans of owners manuals. Below is what I have so far. Later, I will add the Pics and scans from my 2013 two, and 2017 four.

For Prius V 2012 and 2013 (All Trims)
    83809-47120

For Prius V 2014 only (All Trims)
    83809-47021

For Prius V 2015 and 2016 (All Trims?)
83809-47120 Without multi info display. To 5/16.
83809-47230 With multi info display. To 5/16.

For Prius V 2017 only (All Trims?)
83809-47121 Without multi info display. From 5/16.
83809-47231 With multi info display. From 5/16.

A quick look at the scan of my 2017 manual (attached) shows the older style I desire is the "Without multi info display" version. However, that means that the right side steering wheel controls will have to be changed as well. Ebay sellers have been quoting me the whole steering wheel, sans air bag, for $110 delivered.

That's why I do not trust eBay listings that say 2012-2013 instrument clusters will fit the 2014 Prius v.

For some reason, the web shows your video sideways. I'll figure it out next week when I am done Ubering.

Quick question on the steering wheel. What are the two extra buttons on the right side below the pad? My 2017 has buttons there, but they have to do with the "multi info display", which is part of the IC. I did not see any part numbers for 2012 -14 v's that had multi info displays.

Yeah sorry. My fault somehow but still dark outside at the time.

Been my son's chauffeur to college, quite busy these days. I can try to retake?

Sorry. In law had a serious stroke getting news as I'm trying to post....

The right side upper button is radar cruise control I believe. It is an image of a car with (3) sonar waves in front.

Left is upper a face with voice waves, then lower phone with receiver down and bottom phone with receiver lifted.

(It's my parents' car. I did not read the FAT manual)...

There is no rush on this. Take care of your family first by all means.

Your explanation of the steering wheel switch differences makes sense. I have not encountered a Prius with the radar Cruise. Thanks.

No need to re-take. I can manage with a frame grab from the video. I can see you have the old style "Hybrid System Indicator" to the left of the Speedometer. I can see that you have the "Traction Battery Gauge" to the right of the Fuel Gauge. Both of these items are missing on "multi info display" versions.

One question I have. The eBay listings I am seeing seem to be very specific about the mileage of these Instrument Clusters. Does this mean the Odometer miles is stored in the Instrument cluster? This would be akin to the old days, when Odometers were mechanical.

My experience with Chrysler ODBII vehicles is that they store the Odometer value in the Powertrain Control Module, not the circuit board that displays the Odometer value. When the PCM in my 2001 Voyager died, I wasn't certain about the exact mileage. Using the odometer photo of my last oil change, I guessed the Odometer value rounded to nearest 500 miles. I had the eBay seller burn the correct VIN and estimated Odometer value into the used PCM. At 171,500, odometer fraud was not an isue.

The ODO systems are stored on a microchip in the instrument cluster. I think it is a wo-rom, which means write once-read only memory.

That stinks. The term is WORM (Write Once Read Many).

I guess that is why your friend who was looking to replace their Instrument Cluster in their 2017 Prius v needed to go back to the dealer if they found one. Makes a simple swap of the IC not so simple.

Dealers have no option but to remove the cluster and send it to a location in Texas. They even keep the process a secret from their dealers.

If they can't repair the board, they will put in a new one and program it with the same ODO mileage as the old one.

Recovering an old document that I wrote in 2017, it recalls that the complete instrument includes two circuit boards that are soldered together.

One part is called the cluster assembly that lists for about $600. It contains the display for the speedometer, odometer, time, fuel gauge and shift position indicator.

The second part is the $1600 circuit board which contains all the LED indicators (turn signals, headlights, taillight, high beam indicator, front fog lights, security, ready, eco mode, power mode, cruise control, etc.)

These have separate part numbers. The complete part number of the assembled unit in the housing is on the paper tag attached to the back of the housing.

None of these parts are available for sale at the parts counter at any Toyota dealer and cannot be ordered even for the dealer themselves. They are charges accrued at the technical center in Texas where the instrument clusters are refurbished.

What is going to happen to the old one? That is the "multi info display" variant (Also available for 2015 and 2016). I am looking for the "without multi info display" variant. I could have sold your friend mine once I downgraded my IC.

I would like to know what the number is on the paper label on the back of your friend's new unit. I see several affordable units that are marked as "83800-47M60" on the paper label, but the pictures don't show the unit powered up, so I can't identify which variant they are.

I don't know which display he has or if the two are interchangeable. Hi is in Florida, and I am in South Carolina.
I 'm only familiar with the basic level 2 instrument cluster on my 2012. I'll have to check with him when he receives it and compares the white tags on the tops of each unit. I only have 2012-2013 compatible displays, myself, and the multi-information display was not introduced until 2015 as a premium addition. Like you, I prefer the simple basic display..

His 2017 Prius v was built on 5/16. We are not sure which display he currently has, since his car was built during the transition between the 2015-2106 display and the later 2017 and up display. The eBay unit was built later and has a later VIN number and would be definitely the 2017 and up multi-function display.

Since the car only had 12,800 miles on it, the display is almost new.

On that account, with the car having that low mileage, I bought the complete fuel pump assembly from the same car as a spare for both of us and another friend with a 2016 Prius v.

I'd photograph the *.pdf file that you attached with the first page and attach it with a question to the vendor. They can see the configuration of the screens without connecting or powering up the instrument panel and tell you if has the multi information display or not.

All the vendor has to do is to shine a flashlight into the front of the display. Everything is easily discernible.

Already ahead of you on this one.

Yesterday, I sent an eBay message to the eBay vendor, with screen shots of owners manual showing the two different versions. Last night (Saturday 1 am), I noticed that I got a response from them, and I don't think they bothered to look at the attachments. Their response:

We get these used, already removed from the vehicle.
We don't have a way to power up.
I replied last night, and told them to use a flashlight, and compare what they see to the screenshots that I included again. Maybe Monday, I will get a response. I will call my dealer Monday, even though their parts website does not understand the part number "83800-47M60" on the paper label, they probably have a more detailed database.

One would think that if they wanted to get a sale, they would have come up with the idea of a flashlight themselves. I think that the people who they have monitor the eBay messages are the lowest ranking employees in the firm, and just want get their inbox cleared as fast as possible.

I strongly suspect the differences between the pre 5/16 and the later units are really minor. The part numbers are only different by the last digit:
    83809-47120 vs 83809-47121.
While shopping for used MFDs, I have noticed that most used part numbers end in a '0', but sometimes end in a '1'. If you look up the part number on the dealer's website, and you enter the part number ending in a '0', you will see that the part is "superseded" by the part number ending in '1'. That suggests that there was a minor improvement, but there is backwards compatibility. If the part is really different, then Toyota issues a whole new part number. The important thing is that he got the cluster with the multi-info display, to match.

As for my wish for the old style IC, the one I am looking at is on sale for about $80 delivered. It also has lower mileage than my 2017 has. It is tempting to try making the switch, but I need to do the research.

Also, Why did your friend need a new cluster?

My friend needs a new instrument panel, because there seems to be a bad trace in his circuit board that causes it to intermittently fade in and out. He only ants a direct replacement. At 70k miles. it is out of warranty.

You might want to check the build date on your car. It is on the label at the bottom of the driver's side door jamb.

    Like you, I'm wondering if 83809-47120., 83809-47230, 83809-47121 and 83809-47131 are interchangeable.
