No. The max power is used only for short periods. The ability to store and then quickly discharge the power is what makes the difference.

okay, ive gotten pretty far with this to a point I know the engine im buying to swap in. The tuning is where I am hitting a wall, a few prospects right now and ill see where I end up.

the rav4 prime motor and battery would be more work than I want to do now, involved rotating the motor and custom exhaust headers. Even this way with the prius ecu a tuner is needed.

ill provide more details once confirmed but a 2.0L Prius is possible... stay tuned.

Poke a block built with thin spiny liners! What could go wrong?

All kinds of cool stuff!! :) Isn't this the thread about how to get 300 whp on a Prius?

Admittedly, with no real world experience on the 1.8, I essentially assumed the same wall thickness thumbrules from my V8 days would apply. I think if you could maintain a 0.150ish" wall thickness all the way around on the sleeve, you'd be ok. Probably even thinner since it's not exactly a high power high rpm engine. I have no idea at all as to what the OEM wall measures, though.

I suppose it would be important to know how much room is available between cylinders also, yikes...that could easily be the real limit. probably already sketchy in that area considering the frequency of head gasket failures

been down this route the last few weeks. its simpler..

nah, the walls are only 8mm.

either way, the ECU is the kicker.
sounds like none of you knew the prius motor is basically the same motor as other Toyota's just stripped down. the thought of a 2.0 bottom with the Prius top is a project in motion for me. an addition ~50hp here. next is swapping the hybrid motor, haven't researched but thought is the hybrid motor from rav4, rear end from Gen 4 AWD with the 50hp Rav4 rear motor. Almost to 300hp going this direction. Not for speed but to carry the additional load, larger wheels and such over long mountain passes. Then you'll say "but the cvt cant handle it", I have that figured out as well.

Any other holes please poke them...

The 1.8 l Toyota ZR family has many variations. The Prius version will have its own top end, (head, cam, pistons)

I bought my Prius for fuel economy, but if that is not important to you, you can get 150 HP 'stock'

Yeah, um.. not sure if you've seen my Prius, I'm less concerned about mpg, want more power while retaining my plugin hybrid system. Longer plugin battery range is also on the list.

Or it's called thought about it and if I find one one fully loaded in the color options I want it'll be mine but for now I want to do what no one's done to a Prius so I will and why did you feel the need to tell me what do as it relates to my build? If you aren't financially assisting, smart a $ s side comments are a true waste of one's time on the internet.

This community would be a different place if you all did more helpful/ contributing to the ideas of others versus all of BS responses like that guy getting bit by a dog in avatar.

I am sorry, I feel that telling you that Toyota has more resources to do it more reliably IS help. Your take seems to be that MPG and reliability are not why you own a Toyota hybrid, which boggles my mind. (If you did not want MPG or reliability in your PHEV, there is the Chrysler Pacifica)

Does quite a lot to explain attempts to make a go fast Prius and what issues they found. None of them found 300 HP. (stock in a RAV 4 Prime) As I understand it, Nitrous does not 'like' start/stop engines and cannot be tuned not to destroy them. Both Turbos and Superchargers will have 'plumbing' issues. (There is not currently any belt driven accessories on a Gen 3, so no room has been left for any. Room under the hood of the Prius I have owned was not plentiful) I linked to an engine half as powerful as a RAV 4 Prime, that should have the same block so does not need lots of room under the hood. So long as you know all about ECU programming for a Prius, it should charge your battery faster than stock. (The world speed record Gen 2 had run out of battery power by the end of its run, I am not discouraging more battery charging. It would have been faster with more battery charge)

Honda k swap comes to mind. of course if you're going to have 2-300 hp from one of those, it's probably a good idea to swap the transmission to a 5 speed and.... well you see where this is going.

8mm wall thickness...I know guys who would have given away their left nut to have 8mm (0.315") wall thickness in a high HP high rpm engine. That has all kinds of overbore potential. 8mm between cylinders, not so much, lol. Are the cylinders on a 1.8 siamese or is there water jacket space between them?

the thought of a 2.0 bottom with the Prius top is a project in motion for me. an addition ~50hp here. Going from an atkinson cycle 1.8 bottom end to a 2.0 (otto cycle?) bottom end, with the 1.8 atkinson cycle head and induction. Is this something that's been done previously and shown a 50hp gain? Would you gain more advantage using otto cycle cam timing? Would a 1.8 head starve a 2.0 bottom end and move power band into a lower rpm?

next is swapping the hybrid motor, haven't researched but thought is the hybrid motor from rav4, rear end from Gen 4 AWD with the 50hp Rav4 rear motor.

I'm looking forward to this. I don't think anyone has ever been able to get any significant modifications on a Prius to work due the complex inter-relationships between all the cars ecus (not sure about Gen3, but Gen 2 has up to 16 ecus). With the things you're looking to do, you're only going to have a Prius body and interior. Everything else will be from other cars. You apparently have a lot more knowledge of how to do the modifications than most people. Heck, we had a guy on here for months just trying to install a different fuel tank in a Gen2 so he could get rid of the bladder system and hold a few more gallons. Total exercise in futility for him.

yeah, the way I obtained this car is less than ideal and it was originally not purchased for me.

never been done, all the knowledgeable techs say I need to manage the Atkinson cycle and all will be good. Gen 3 has 3 ECUs, I'm going to purchase a ECU writer as none of the OBD2 devices I have want to write, or maybe its just the software I'm using.

I wasn't aware they were able to reduce it down to three for the later Gen. That should hopefully make everything easier. One of these days I'm going to have to buy a Gen 3 just for the heck of it so I can play around and learn something.

    Which three do you mean?

Techstream connected to a Gen 3 can hail up to around 28 ECUs, depending on trim level and options.

This will not seem like 'help' but ditch your Prius while it still works. Cars the owner loves last significantly longer then cars the owner is saddled with. Buy a car you love and don't look back.
