2017, Prius V - occasionally shakes when lifting foot off accelerator.

Sounds like it is happening when the engine shuts off. I might start by checking the motor and transaxle mounts.

 

Does this happen when your going over 50 mph?

 

Is this at EV or ICE mode/speeds?

 

Have cleaned the entire EGR System?

 

With those miles he must have? But maybe late in the day?

 

A shake when lifting the accelerator is happening when the engine shuts off. More likely to be something like engine mounts, something else loose or maybe just hyper sensitive attention to normal engine shutdowns.

I'm having a similar issue with our 2013 v Five. I would describe it as "lugging" under light acceleration (like pulling up to a parking spot), with attendant vibrations. Almost felt like an unbalanced tire for awhile. My OBD scanner and also my mechanic don't find anything, but it feels like it's getting worse, so maybe it'll be diagnosable at some point.

I did run the oil level far down once when I first bought the car (at about 140k miles, one year ago) and wonder if that is related. (The oil pressure light came on, I added 3quarts!) I wasn't prepared for him much oil it uses...about 1L every 1k miles(!) That was back at like 143k. Recently I ran a bottle of Lucas gas system cleaner through it, and if anything I feel the "lugging" is worse, but, it's hard to track.

This is my first hybrid, so I naturally wonder if it's something hybrid-specific, like maybe the clutching between the two motors? But I know so little about how it works, yet. (Like, are there even clutches? Do both motors drive through the CVT? A lot to learn!)

Look for motor mounts, cv joints or brake problems. Or its just normal vibration when the engine shuts down, which it does almost everytime you lift your foot off the petal or apply the brakes.

There are no clutches. What you have is an electric planetary gear set where the gears are always engaged. The engine is connected to the transaxle as well as both electric motors/generators and the drive axles at all times.

The interesting thing is with proper electric motor synchronization the engine can be at zero rpm and still connected. In a similar manner, the drive axles are always connected yet they can be stopped with or without the engine rotating. The computerized transaxle with two electric motor generators allowing regen is probably the most reliable but complex piece of engineering in the whole car.

If only we could say the gen3 engine was so reliable. But we can't because of design flaws.

 

@NickNo, Your oil consumption is really more of a concern than any "lugging" you might be experiencing. Your oil consumption might make a possible lugging sound louder, but I doubt it is a problem by itself.

I have a 2013 Prius V two that I bought at 22K miles four years ago. It now has 95K miles, and consumes no oil. It is my Uber driver vehicle, and I have changed the oil at 5K intervals. As someone who only drove stick shift from 1985 to 2005, I am hyper aware of any "lugging" symptoms / sounds.

I have noticed since I bought the 2013 4 years ago a minor lugging sound. It only occurs when the instantaneous MPG is between 30 and 35. It goes away if I change the accelerator position or the road changes even slghtly. This would be hard to pin down on some models of the Prius V. My 2017 four has a different instrument cluster that can't display instantaneous MPG. I have not driven the 2017 by myself enough to notice if it too has this lugging sound.

The "lugging" I have noticed is really minor, and most people would not notice it. I have not been the least bit concerned, since it has remained about the same after 70k miles. My 2001 chrysler minivan was designed to have a worse lugging when in 4th gear / OD at 50MPH on a level highway.

 

My suggestion is get your egr cooler cleaned and a catch can installed... my egr cooler was getting plugged at 60k... once fully plugged it can't do its job and can lead to head gasket failure. So preventative maintenance is key for long living healthy prius
