Seeing how there have been reports of theives steeling aftermarket ones as well I don't think there is any guarantee other than not to own a car or to put on a straight pipe.

I still think that welding rebar or threaded rods on the top of each catalytic converter and taking the center cluster out, drilling holes and welding or bolting the cats to the car directly above the cats is the best deturant. It would be awefully difficult to get a cutting tool up over the catalytic converter to cut them. And breaking into the car and removing the center console to get at them from the top would also probably be more than what they'd be willing to bargain for.

Also a variety of deturants help. Paint the catalytic bright colors. Engrave it with words like "Stolen! Call Police!" all over it. Weld it to the car. Put on a CatShield or similar. Install a CatEye system. Install downward facing steak knives all over. And do a steathy EV conversion and install a fake catalytic converter with a tracking device.

Good bet since the Feds a few weeks ago just caught some guy in Indiana with thousands, yes thousands, of apparently stolen cats from Chicago metro area in a Warehouse awaiting shipment to points unknown. Probably headed to a China or Mexico recycling plant.

After the initial TV report, hoopla, I never heard nor saw anything more. Probably made bail and skipped town or it will be dismissed as most nonviolent crimes are lately in the ChIraq metro area. I know someone who has had two cats stolen in Chicago from the same Prius in a four month period within the past year! One was witnessed on live security camera video. The police don’t respond to theft in progress calls anymore because the powers that be in Chicago prosecute them if the perpetrators resist and are injured.

it is pathetic that law abiding people have to resort to this. In the Old West, why didn’t crooks steal a person's horse?

They did steal horses back then. Of course the punishment for horse theft was very high, sometimes, upon conviction, resulted in the death sentence. Part of the reason was that people's livelyhood depended on their horses in a much more literal sense than depending on a car.
