The current Prius models have been around now for 5 years. Previous generation were also five years. While there appear to only be model enhancements to the 2022 line, curious if Toyota will be releasing the next generation sometime soon? Thoughts?

IMHO there are two possibilities we can expect from Toyota.
    a) End of Prius Prime
    b) New model in 2+ years that will feature drastic redesign and most likely slightly different battery tech.

Considering the new Aqua (new cost saving battery), I really hope Toyota won't kill Prime. It has a huge potential, even as another plugin and not pure EV.

The Prius is still the most efficient gas vehicle on the road and gas prices are high ($3.25 where we are, at least). I would imagine there would still be demand for a reliable efficient relatively inexpensive car.

If I’m not mistaken previous gens were six years. And Toyota USA and Canada are into 2022 model year for fourth gen now (seventh year).

    I'm with @bisco; it's a head-scratcher... (n)

Six years was the norm for past gens, but Toyota and others have let models drag on between redesigns. Then consider the Prime came out a year after the Prius. Toyota may be planning to stop that difference between them. A change in design direction could also have happened.

The rumor columns are saying the next gen will be a 2023 model year.

I'm counting on it being discontinued. It will keep my streak alive. The last 2 cars I bought (Saab 9-5, Chevy Sonic) were discontinued shortly after I bought them. Toyota dropping the Prius Prime would make it 3 in a row...

Low sales may mean the end of the Prius in the States, but the Prime will be around for the state ZEV programs at least.

I heard somewhere 2023 was next generation Prius Prime. Hope so.
Also, saw where the Prius is #1 with consumers for holding on to it for 15 yrs or more.

could be. unfortunately, there aren't enough consumers for prius to make it a viable alternative for the future, without some kind of major change.

Yeah. $4.20/gal is the cheapest around here. Gas was real cheap. Now it isn't. I expect fuel efficient cars will be making a comeback. Can't even find a Prime on the dealer lots around here anyway as they're sold out.

Yeah, it's called $5.00 a gallon gasoline. Also, I think the hybrid Corolla is canabalizing Prius sales.

could happen, we're already at 4 bucks for premium at some stations. california does not make a market though, the rest of the country needs to follow.

Currently 5.40$/gallon locally (translated from litres for my American friends ;) ). I’ve just done a 1560km trip with few opportunities for charging (only three full charges over seven days) across the Laurentians and part of the Canadian Shield (so very little flat land, unlike my local region). 3.3l/100km (about 74 US MPG if my math is any good—too lazy to look it up) [that includes whatever EV only kms travelled—didn’t keep track of the fuel sources individually] Didn’t try anything special to save fuel (used A/C liberally, car was pretty loaded with people and gear, travelled about 15km over highway speed limits—flow of traffic speed). With my Xterra, under best circumstances, that would have been about 15l/100km (about 15-16 US MPG). Glad I made the purchase.

Would do it again for next gen model if no viable BEV option is available to me (though as I just got my Prime, that scenario is somewhat unlikely unless there’s a BEV Prius in the future).

All future vehicles I buy will be EVs. Hopefully Toyota creates a spirit-successor to Prius in the forthcoming 'bZ' EV sub-brand.

The odds are stacked agasint the Prius brand. I think the current-gen is the end of the line for the Prius as a hybrid. In Japan, the Aqua is more popular and in the US, my guess is that the RAV4 Hybrid outsells the Prius. And I wouldn't be surprised if the RAV4 Prime would outsell the Prius Prime too once the shortages are over. If Toyota plans to release another generation of Prius cars, it needs to be even more efficient when so many of Toyota non-hybrids can get low 50 mpgs. Plus the other Toyotas handle and look better to most people. Toyota tried to capitalize on the Prius branding with the C and the V, it didn't work. To Toyota, i think the Prius brand is dead, its no longer the darling of "eco cool", Tesla took that away from Toyota. Toyota wanted to be cool again so it did the Tesla thing and sold us that shitty 11in touch screen in the car.
