    yeah.....
You can always tell when people are from places that do not have tropical downpours, and/or are unaware of interstate minimum speeds.

Is smog really a problem in the land o thousands of lakes?

Well the POPO, have an emergency clause, for folk's that "won't slow down in rain?" Fortunately, I have never encountered it, because when the rain is crazy, the NHP seems to hide also. :)

But "to fast for conditions," is the Emergency Clause, that they can use if you get pulled over in bad condition's! I drive fast still, but I don't mess around in fog, snow and ice? But some of those Subby WRX (STI) guy's wow!

I got passed by one, one morning on the way to work, 65 mph normally (and folks do 80) and this Subby flew over the hill and was just flat gone! He got no grief from me and he must have made it to wherever he was going? I did not see him pulled over or a wreck, as I got to where I was going.

Not really a "Prii," problem but no matter how fast you think you are you? There is always someone faster. :)

    wait, what ?
why are you accusing women of being guilty of doing all the dumb things I listed earlier ?

    that doesn't make any sense.

The prevalence of mass chain reaction pileups in adverse conditions shows that many people are unaware of, or unwilling to obey, the Basic Speed Law: regardless of posted speed limits or so-called minimum highways speeds, don't drive too fast for the prevailing conditions.

In the most recent such big winter pileup I remember from this state, a foggy-icy event near Spokane, the State Patrol gave 'basic speed law' citations to nearly every driver in the pileup.

Comically, one of the young drivers receiving such a citation, complained to a nearby reporter that the trooper refused to give him an acceptable numeric speed. He didn't seem to understand that the correct answer was not any particular number, but rather a speed that would have kept him from striking the previously stricken vehicle in front of him.

The next time you drive on a hilly curvy road, think of the number of times you couldn't stop is someone was stopped just around the bend. I watched a similar scenario the other day (fortunately from the opposite side of the road) and thought there but for luck and timing I'd be. I saw the accordion forming and avoided the flyover that would have found traffic at 60 miles per hour unaware that there was an upcoming choice, hit the stopped car or go down the 40 foot high bank. Cause: an 18 wheeler broken down.

the kid was probably working an angle for his legal defense:

if the trooper can't define what speed the kid was driving (because he didn't witness it) , and can't define what a safe speed would be , then the citation can be ruled as retaliation/pointless.

honestly I don't see how citing everyone in a pile up is going to do anything positive anyway. their "speed" had nothing to do with the collisions, but their following distances sure did.

if the trooper is so intent on hammering a lesson into this situation, why not use a real lesson, like "safe following distance for conditions" that has a real amount, instead of an imaginary "safe speed"that he can't define on camera or in court ?

Speak for yourself. I slow down for such corners, based on traction conditions and sight line. We have not just stopped vehicles, but also large wildlife and livestock, fallen trees, and fallen boulders.
Apparently you haven't experienced fog or smoke or blowing dust that shrinks visibility to less than your full highway speed reaction and stopping distance.

There's essentially just the one degree of freedom there. If you chose to follow at X feet doing Y mph and you weren't able to stop, were you "following too close for conditions (including speed Y)" or "driving too fast for conditions (including distance X)"? Um, yes.

"But you can't defiiiiiine the safe speed!!1!"? The definition of the Basic Speed Law is about as simple as it gets: if you crashed because you didn't have time to do something non-crashy, you were breaking it.

Some people may be susceptible to some cleverly worded confusion on that point, but the person sitting on the bench in the courtroom probably isn't one of them.

of course I've driven through rain, snow, fog, etc.

    I understand your point.

what does citing all the drivers do to prevent this happening again ? nothing.

does education (my entire point above talking about following distances) do something ? yes, yes it does. or at least it has the opportunity to do something. just giving the typical "mad cop" citation to everyone will accomplish nothing.

    that was my point.

so, when a car pulls from an exit ramp (0mph traffic) and into the regular lanes (70mph traffic) , and causes a chain reaction of collisions, ticket everyone that struck anything else ?

I've seen people do this before... there were very skilled attentive drivers that missed them and didn't cause chain reaction/mass collision... again, the one car serving across lanes causes , or nay cause the huge collisions, not the drivers speed , and sometimes, not the following distances either.

cite the driver that made the dumbest mistake resulting in everyone else sliding/serving to avoid them... instead the entire group.

    :)

I've noticed that most Prius drivers here in Colorado (except me) drive like a bat out of hell. The majority also have a big Thule cargo box on top of their Prius.

I get hate all the time. The problem is I go the speed limit in good weather, and less than the speed limit in bad weather. Everyone else wants to go way above the speed limit in any weather. I do hypermile a little, but only if nobody is behind me.

Last week I went over several steep 2-lane mountain passes. I went the posted speed limit. But pickup after pickup, and SUV after SUV all took turns riding right on my bumper and then passing me, usually in no passing spots. I'm actually nice enough that I pull over every once in a while and let traffic by even though I'm going the speed limit.

No one will ever convince me I should drive faster than the speed limit. My only speeding ticket I got was at a time I was suffering financially and I had to go a month without food since it was $160 and that was all the money I had for food. I was going 49 mph in a 40 mph zone, partly because I had this jerk on my tail so close all I could see was the grill in the rear view mirror. But I got the ticket and he didn't. I never want a speeding ticket ever again.

Are drivers not supposed to get citations for their driving misconduct unless the officer can demonstrate that that specific citation will prevent a future crash? I don't agree. The immediate citation should directly improve some of the drivers, and word of it getting out to the community should educate others.

This chain reaction was definitely caused by misconduct of very many drivers, both those unable to remain in sufficient control to stay on the slippery road, and those following too close to avoid collision. Not literally everyone involved was cited, just a large majority of them.

I've been in a chain reaction crash in this state, when a gradual slowdown with everyone's brake lights lit up, suddenly turned into a very hard stop. I didn't hit anyone, and got no ticket. The guy behind me initially stopped without hitting me, so he also got no ticket. But he was then shoved into me by the teen who slammed into his rear end. She did get a ticket.
Ticket everyone who was following too close to the vehicle in front and hit them, or caused another collision by dodging into someone else. But not those who were following at a safe distance but hit something else that suddenly appeared in their lane without sufficient warning for a safe response.

Cite everyone whose misconduct contributed to the collisions. These days, that is most of them.

Interesting that the person that feels people getting harassed on the road did something to deserve it doesn't feel cops should cite everyone responsible for a crash.

    Got a RAV4HV, so not a problem.

With the Gen2 Prius, I would see some drivers ASSUME I was slow even if I was going +10 over speed limit, so the main thing we observed was drivers trying to pass just in case we were slow pokes.

Well bottom line is you got screwed! The cop was an A-Hole but that does you no good, so just saying.

But just so you know. Court's don't care about cash out of pocket? You can offer to do "Comminute Service." X hours per hour of service. $160 dollar fine would be 16 hours of community service. If you don't want point's on your license, you do have to pay for that. But it's usually in the 25 to 50 dollar range in online or in person, to take a class.

I have a lot of experience in playing the game at speed's under 100 mph anyway. A midnight run in my 89 Porsche 951 Turbo ... I got away with it. :)

Hwy 50 at midnight 25, 35 miles of straight road! But you know where are you gonna go? Felony Speeding at 100 plus as far as I understand? Not really a "Prius," for the most part. But so you know ... if you add a long hill, LOL yeah a "Prius," and a full battery, will easily get you into the 100+ Felony Speeding Club! Just saying. :)

I try and stay between 15 And 20 over the limit on the highway. Everywhere else I'm about 10 or so over. I have no problems with slow drivers if they stay in the right lane. My hypermiling is trying not to brake around turns/ bends. Once in awhile I will freak-out the traction control and it starts to flash.

The place was over 100 miles from my home. I was doing a friend a favor and taking him to the city to catch a plane. I don't know if I could do community service for another county in my county.

I got one point taken off. It's the only point I've ever had taken off.

If the police was an -ahem- jerk or not I do not know. All I know is the message I got was to never go over the speed limit. So I don't and never will.

If other drivers don't agree they can do whatever they want, it's their problem. Other drivers don't give out tickets. If they get mad, drive like idiots and wreck my car I'm suing. If they really want me to drive faster they need to go convince their local highway department to increase the speed limit. Because if the sign says 75, 55 or 10mph, that's exactly what I'm going to do. Unless it's snowing or something.
