Because it stands out in a dull, just kind of putrid way.

    I know which I'd rather - and it's not a RAV4.

Too many of these "same-as, same as" boring SUVs - which are less practical than a good hatch, but people following the sheep in front.

Personally, I'd rather a smallish Estate/Wagon - best of all worlds. A hatch with a big back floor like PRIUS is the next best.

Yep - like this - sadly dropped because nobody bought them.

My guess is the reality is, some who went to the dealership:

    "I WANT A MANUAL - in BLUE".
    upload_2021-7-19_11-37-13.png

"Sorry - haven't one in stock, it'd be order from Bavaria, but I can sell you am off-Black AUTO - anything else will be 6-8 months".

"OK, hate black, but I'll take it in Auto."

A fair video but control laws that do not give the driver full control of the PHEV engine have no attraction. So we're keeping the 2014 BMW i3-REx which does.

My advice, quit making the Prius look different to stand out. A car is a sizeable cost and people aren’t going to spend $25K so they can look different and not in a good way. If Toyota sold the Corolla Touring Sports as a hybrid like they do in Europe, Prius sales would be non-existent, which is probably why they didn’t. Probably the same reason they don’t offer the C-HR as a hybrid here.

And knock it off with the Jetsonian inspired axe-maul look. It’s tiring. Nobody, that I know anyways, just looks at the floating roof and says, “ooo nice car”. Since the Prius is for looking forward try some experimentation, like swapping the rear motor with the front motor in the AWD model and make it rear drive centric. Starting to make a wish list so I’ll knock it off as that’s in another thread.

One of those reviews where the car is mostly a prop, opining reviewer rambles on and on.

the market has spoken; hope hope hope next gen will come back to core principles, but not optimistic.

I think it needs to stand out, it just needs to be a really good design but with a linkage to the classic Prius shape. The Gen 4 has aspects that are great ... I actually like the rear. But the front and sides are just not good enough and this turns people off. It has to standout but in a good way but that does not mean it has to appeal to all people. Toyota seem to be heading in a more sporty direction and that is probably a good thing.

In my view Prius needs to showcase the new technology and that's not really BEV in my view as everyone is doing that. I would like to see the new model excel at fuel economy by say pushing thermal efficiency to say 45%. New battery technology should come to Prius first but it looks like the Aqua is first with the new Bipolar NiMH. Also the Prius needs to be quicker, as per the reviewers comments, and perhaps this new battery can do that.

However, if Toyota wants to 'lead' with the Prius ... they need to shorten the refresh to say 4 years, as 6 years is too long.

The thing is, the Prius is longer leading edge - part of it is our ancient laws (no matrix LED headlights or dynamic turn signals), others is cost (no solar roof, ventilated seats, 360° camera etc)

I skimmed the video. He is basically comparing a regular hybrid Prius to the Rav4 Prime. Because of that, the video makes no sense whatsoever.

He dwells on 0-60 times. Don't know if it's just me, but doesn't seem high priority to most Prius owners.

'most prius owners', that's the problem. toyota needs to find something that appeals to the mass market, while increasing mpg's.
ultimately, it may simply come down to gas rices. people aren't going to buy a prius because of climate change

The prius had a good run, but even in japan the yaris and corrola outsell the prius now. I'm sure its the hybrid versions of both.
How much has it really improved from gen II until today?

    Compare Side-by-Side

    Compare Side-by-Side

More luxury and technology but only the eco with a lithium battery and a few other changes, does much better in terms of mpg. The corrola and camry do as well as the non eco prius (52 versus gen 2's 46 mpg). The ioniq blue hybrid at 58 mpg beats the prius eco. There is not much penalty going phev for charge depleted in gas mileage.

I haven't seen anything that says bipolar nimh is better in hybrids than lion. My guess is lithium is superior and that is why it is used in the prius eco and the ioniq hybrid. Let's wait until they actually test a car on wltp or epa not some easy test.

Easiest way to make the prius accelerate better is to design it from the ground up as a phev. Use the yaris hybrid (1.5l atkinson 3 cylinder) and it likely would not cost much more per unit. With the yaris hybrid and aqua in japan, and corola and camery hybrids in North america and europe, it seems like an easy decision. Pushing thermal efficiency from 41% (camry hybrid) to 45% likely requires heat recovery most likely through turbo charging, That adds cost which likely would be better spent adding a bigger battery.

I don't know if its the time, its what they are putting out.

I recall someone once saying Know your market or something like that.
OK, maybe it was more than once.
