Sorry for those poor responses and maybe try your luck.
They never looked under my car at smogs.

I do not think anyone would loan you one but maybe if you left your Driver license and a deposit plus the one you are removing and a signed note?

I don't mind the humor. Probably healthy to laugh about stolen Prius cats since that is a real problem we all think about. But that being said, I'd use the Sawzall for sure. Real cat thieves are brazen and don't care about the noise, so embrace the noise. /S

I live in SoCal too and there are many small smog test only businesses that will do a pretest for a small fee. They do the equivalent test without your car being jacked into the state computers to make sure you're going to pass. As long as error codes don't pop up in the ECM they're probably gonna let you slide and if you pass the pretest you are going to get the smog cert. I paid $8 on one of my cars for the pretest and when it didn't show codes I was told it was good to go. I did the test and passed... it really shouldn't have with an aftermarket cat.

Just something to consider.

 

It's cheaper and easier to find a shady smog guy. I would spend your energy finding that smog guy instead.

I know a guy, he's like a blind smog tech, doesn't really visually inspect anything

 

You could also get the CARB compliant Magnaflow cat for $590. and pay a muffler shop to install. You'd be legal this way and much less expensive than the OEM part, which is difficult to source sometimes.

I can't believe that people in SoCal aren't renting out their original cats for $200 per day.

Heck, you could buy a new Toyota one and have it paid for within a few weeks.

 

All you have to worry about is that the person "renting" the cat actually returns it. It's not like you can go to the police if they don't.
