Has anyone done anything with this weird open area below the dash and above the glove box? Decorative trim would be too narrow. Lights? I feel like I should throw some flowers in there or something

it's just a little zen for your passenger to focus on

Ahhh, the great useless shelf mystery!

Seriously though, alanclarkeau is correct. I often do consultancy work for forensic investigators. I've many times seen police pictures of the aftermath of vehicle collisions. Air bag deployment is absolutely 110% something you should never, ever, have anything anywhere near, because the explosive force is very powerful - many times more than a shotgun for example. That object could end up going right through the passengers head, right through the front head rest, right through the rear passenger, right through the rear headrest and right through the glass.

I appreciate the "shelf" is below the deployment area of the airbag, but immediately prior and during a collision things move around in the car.

The dash has become a sculpture feature; they’ve lost sight of the form-follows-function maxim.

It is such a weird little space!

I am aware of airbags. In 2009 a 17yo kid with no license (and 3 friends) pulled out in front of me on the highway in his dad’s truck and I had the unfortunate split-second decision to t-bone him or try to go around and hit the oncoming car head-on. I t-boned him. As I was in a car and he was in a truck, almost all the (body, and vehicle) damage was taken by my passenger and me. The accident happened in front of a police officer though, so he was found 100% at fault. I still have a very faint scar on my arm where the airbag scraped and/or burned it.

I wasn’t really serious about the flowers. But something decorative like a pretty dash appliqué for that space or something.

It does happen - in German cars:

On the little tray, I sit the roller-door remote, and occasionally a pencil - if I remember to return it there. But - not that useful.

Yeah, I had a friend with one of the “new” VW Beetles in the early 2000s with the little vase. :)

All kinds of weird lil "why is this space here" areas, like above the 'Start' button and behind the phone tray there's a whole gap of space back there. Very weird choices.
