Just curious if anyone succeed to get charged from online app offer such as Plugshare? I have tried few time and got one reply yesterday for offering wall outlet. Quick question is it it worth getting a spare charger to use with wall outlet offer only? Quite a lot of charger L1 & L2 with adapter around $150 on ebay, so it means one needs to get charged at least 100 time to get break-even
I use it charge at home daily, to be honest kind of lazy to unplug & threw on the car everytime to go out Still $150 for a spare one is not justified for the sole purpose to take offer from Plugshare. For one can get charged at work, I think it is justified.
Many people install an L2 charger at home and keep the OEM 120v plug-in charger in the car for use when traveling or visiting friends or casual opportunities. I think Plugshare started out as a way of plug-in vehicle owners to help one-another by offer changing locations for free or nominal cost. Most charging sites now listed on Plugshare are either fee-based locations like ChargePoint or free courtesy charging locations at businesses and shopping areas. Also listed are parking lots and garages which have charging locations either included with their parking fee or at extra cost. And, there are some free charging locations in public parking lots, at public libraries, municipal buildings, etc. As for "free" 120 volt outlets, some are listed on Plugshare and others are just out there if you look around. I do not recommend parking in front of a random house and running a 50-foot extension cord across their front lawn to the outlet on their patio. Although I did see a news story re-posted here about someone who came home to find exactly this.
IMHO, for a PP, any charge station away from home is not worth spending money on unless you happen to be at work or somewhere you regularly spend hours at that location. Even with an L2 EVSE, you are going to be waiting for 2 hours to gain 25 miles of EV range which is roughly equivalent to the half-gallon of gasoline mileage. That's only $1.5 to $2 for 2 hours of wait. I think your time is worth more than that.
I agree. The difference in cost per mile between gasoline and electric operation is not particularly meaningful. Depending upon local electric rates and gasoline prices -- and how much you drive -- it might only amount to the cost of a large cup of coffee one way or the other. However, as the Salamander King notes, if you're spending time working, shopping or dining someplace where there is low-cost or no-cost charging available, the time factor is not that important. For example, there is a Trader Joe's with two free ChargePoint stations about six miles from here. If there is no one already using the ChargePoint station, it makes sense to plug in the Prime and let it partially charge while shopping. Depending upon how long I take looking at the frozen cauliflower gnocci, the tiramisu torte, and the Philly cheesesteak bao buns -- or looking for the stuff I really came in to get -- I can pretty much re-charge the Prime and make the trip for free.
we were Aeroviroment's 1st orange county install, late 2010 ..... & with installation? (& them taking advantage knowing of 50% rebate from our local utility) they charged us $2,000. Once we upgraded to the 80 amp Tesla high power wall charger ($350 including shipping), I took apart the aerovironment & couldn't believe it ... was filled with maybe $25 in components. .
