I had a problem with a garage that forgot to replace the coolant cap and the coolant emptied itself on the road creating overheating and other broken parts. . The water pump broke by the propeller broken free of the shaft. The garage said it is normal wear giving me number that water pump are replaced often at the mileage. That number probably include people that got car accident, manufacturer defect and preventive repair and will probably used in court to show it is normal . Is there number somewhere I can find number about broken propeller occurence

The water pump has a magnetic coupling. Maybe this video will help.

If the water pump failed as a result of the garage doing an incomplete repair, leaving cap off so system ran dry allowing pump to fail by running without liquid. They need to own and replace it. Hopefully it is not going to lead to other overheat related failures like head gaskets, etc. There are Prius all over the place with 200k plus on original water pumps. Insist they make it right, or take your losses and tow to somewhere better.

The plastic pump impeller has a tendency to separate eventually where two parts are bonded together.

Then the pump motor tends to spin too fast (because it's not really moving much water, so it is not working as hard). Depending on the model year of the Prius, that might not generate a trouble code (in the earliest Gen 3s, they hadn't thought there was a reason to have a code for "pump runs too fast").

Does the shop admit to leaving the coolant cap off? Did you notify them right away? Once you're arguing statistics you've already lost.

That's the vidoe I put up, and was wondering why not just replace the MOVING part, that seems
to come apart? Less than $50 for that part, $200 plus for the whole pump...

The car is repaired but I am preparing for court. It costed me around 2500$ canadian with the towing, taxi, rented car and transfer to the toyota dealer and a month and a half without my car. They will plead that it broke normally and it was not related with the missing coolant and engine heat going up with number showing that this part is replaced often. On my side I have to prove it broke because of what they did mixed with some principle that they have a responsability of success which is not sure I will win

It was broken like in the middle image that Chapmanf put but it was also broken under it where it attached to the magnet. I did not saw the pump when it was extracted, I got some of the parts from the dealer. They kept the aluminium case so I don't know if the garage make money with the metal

They also deleted the memory so when it got to the dealer the mechanic of the dealer said to me that it was empty and they had no proof of what happened on the computer.
