Awhile back my wife couldn't get into her car even with the manual key. Turned out she had the key for MY car, but her key fob in the house was close enough for her to start the car and drive to the store.

Moral of the story .... is the OP using the right key?

In a more traditional key, the key’s electronics are bonded with the key, no risk of mix up. They’re still expensive but at least there’s that.

Doesn't the fob have to be within 6 feet or so to activate the car?
And the car can tell if it's inside the car? I know if I stop out of my car it starts beeping
and having a hissy fit that the key fob can't be found.

Daily battery driver, connected to solar roof panel and sub woofer amplifier. Quick disconnects onto jumper cables, don't be found on road dead.

It was in a kitchen drawer, at least 30 feet from the car, but the car did start and she drove all the way to town.
But if it's in my pocket under my phone it can't be found. Go figure.

I just tested my Prius again with battery disconnected and car doors all shut and locked - think about how tricky that was to do - and, after applying lock graphite liquid, the mechanical key works wonderfully now! Yay.

By the way, these fobs are a pain- I’m always setting the panic alarm off. No more! I dug the orange cap out and super-glued a plastic panel over the orange button area! No awkward false panic anymore!

I have a similar problem with gen3, but my battery is disconnected and car is locked. I tried mechanical key and it doesn't open the driver's door. I am not sure if there is a mechanical lock when turning the key, the key was hard to turn at first, now it is turning both directions about 45 degrees but nothing happens. Feels like the key is not right, is it possible to turn the key if it is not correct?

I think I had a similar situation. Did you try graphite liquid or even repeatedly rubbing pencil on your key and repeatedly inserting it?
