Should I or Shouldn’t I?

    Hey all, we have a 2010 Prius and I really feel it’s time to part ways with it. It has about 200,000kms, the rust above the windshield is getting bad, someone did a hit and run and cracks/scuffed the front bumper and we just had to change a rear wheel bearing and connector because worn and corroded, so this tells me the other side is probably near it’s end too. Changed the 12v battery in February.
    wwe bought it about 5yrs ago for a good price since it had high mileage (we’ve only done maybe 25k on it).

    Sorry for being long winded.

    Today we’re going to go test drive a 2020 Prime, which is fully loaded. It already has 54000kms... should that concern me? I really like the look and specs on it and I’m sure I’ll like the drive of it too. The mileage is just slightly concerning, considering the track record of the Prius.
    Thoughts?

    Is it time for an upgrade?

    Well, it sounds like the 2010 has had about all the salt it can handle, so I'd be thinking of trading it in if I was ready to buy a replacement.

    On the Prime you're considering, 54k km is quite a bit of use for one model year. But it always seemed to me that in northern, salty areas, rust and time are the car killers. Take that out of the picture and the Prime should last as many miles or more than any other Prius. At 54,000 km, it's practically brand new. Unless rust gets to it, expect to be able to drive it another 175,000 or so.

    I’ve spent the past few days researching it since we sent our 2010 to the garage on Easter Monday for that wheel bearing. I’m really digging the 2020. I’m hoping we won’t be disappointed in the test drive. Our intent going forward is to always keep a vehicle until it’s 10yrs old. My truck is a 2016, so five more to go haha.

    What is your charging infrastructure? No real point to a Prime if you can't charge.

    Well, if you're only driving 5,000 km/year, I'm pretty sure the rust will get it long before anything else major happens. I really like my 2017 but do kind of envy some of the new features on the 2020-21.

    Hmm with a 1year old high milage prime, is it worth buying used? Is it a lot cheaper compared to a new one? What you would pay with all the incentives available if you bought new? Also, at 54k km, it looks like the warranty is almost used up. I think you need to run the numbers to see if it's actually cheaper to buy new vs buying a high mileage car that is only a year old.

    It has to be a lot cheaper. They only put 5,000km/year on that 2010. The Prime qualifies for the $2,500 federal rebate (plus whatever provincial rebate if applicable).

    I had my 2010 Prius for 10 years and 160,000km with practically no issues (front suspension needed replacement soon. I didn't inquire specifically which part but I suspect it's the shocks and/or bushings).

    If it has 54,000km, after 1-2 years (the 2020 came out in May 2019 so it could be as old as 2 years), then it could've been used as a ride share or a delivery vehicle. If it's 2 years old, then it's probably just a regular user (especially if it's in Ontario or the Maritimes since you guys tend to commute long distances and/or travel far for recreational activities).

    The Prime isn’t very popular in my area, I’d have to travel over 500kms and change provinces, which I’m not aloud due to the pandemic, to get a good deal on a new prime upgrade with technology package. There’s two base model prime within driving distance of me and they are approximately $13000 plus tax more and not the color my wife likes. Our province doesn’t have any extra incentives, therefore would only have the fed $2500... so let’s say $11500 cheaper after incentives and such for the decked out model, with roof rack and hitch...

    As for the model year, the main ones would be five seats vs four (rarely needed), and apple car play (probably nice to have but I'm not desperate to get it). And that pesky 199.9 mpg limit on the trip computer in the early 2017 models like mine should be a capital offense. About the only time mine isn't pegged at 199.9 is when I'm on a long road trip ... maybe once a year.

    Aside from the model year changes, the upper trim level has the BSM system and rear cross-traffic that I've come to appreciate in my wife's Prius, but that's just trim level.

    $11,500 is significant and Prii are reliable. The more you can utilise the EV range, the better. I mean, the HV mode is still pretty darn efficient - moreso than the Gen 3 so either way, it's a win. (A roof box will cut into the highway efficiency but you should still be ahead anyway).

    I've only used half a tank since March 2020 even though I've travelled another 16,000km due to strictly local driving (I haven't travelled out of my health region except once to a neighbouring city to pick up lunch)

    Test drive was nice. The only imperfecttu(It’s used, so I don’t mind) is a light scratch in the rear bumper (huggable) and the headliner in the rear is oddly worn... I’m guessing the previous owner had big dogs and their heads rubbed the headliner.

    the sales associate wasn’t 100% knowledgeable on the vehicle. They tried convincing me it has a spare.. I showed her what it has in place lol. The same associate said you can play video games on the screen when parked? I can’t find anything on this. Can anyone chime in on this?

    You cannot play games as stock from the factory.

    You can play video off USB but weirdly it doesn’t take up the whole screen (or even “full width” across the bottom half of the screen where it’s displayed).

    Now you could mod it to play whatever you want but it works better on the base model with the 7” screen than the 11.6” screen.

    She seemed to say you could use the vehicles steering wheel and pedals to play a racing game. Again, I have zero faith in what she was saying haha.

    She literally described a Tesla - that's how the games work on a Tesla (use the wheel and pedals to play a racing game, similar to Mario Kart). Wow, completely clueless. Ask her to demonstrate (if you're willing to kill time lol) and see how long it takes for her to realise it's not happening.

    It looks similar to this (this is a speed bypass module).

    Hey all, little update.
    We posted our 2010 for sale are getting lots of interest already. I also contacted the dealership that has that 2020 and it hasn’t sold yet. The extended warranty they offer is $3000cdn for a 10yrs 160km. It covers basically everything a factory 3yr would cover. With this added warranty, I’m about $10000cdn under what a new one would be, but with longer warranty, factory roof rack and a small hitch so we could put our bicycle rack on.
    I’m feeling this would be a good deal. To top it off, if I get say $6500 for our 2010, it makes it that much nicer.

    That extended warranty seems too good to be true (but I guess $3k is a decent amount for an extra 7 years beyond the remaining one year left in the basic bumper-to-bumper warranty). I’d scrutinize the details of that warranty to ensure it really is bumper-to-bumper. (Note that the battery is warranted for 10 years and 240,000km while the hybrid system is warranted for 8 years and 160,000km from the new car warranty as is. Powertrain is the same 5 years, 100,000km as your Gen 3 and that includes the power split device.).


    Aside from that, it sounds like a good deal. It is a big difference between the Gen 3 and the Prime in terms of ride comfort and handling. Oh and fuel economy too.

    agreed, I had to call them again to get the details straight. The company they provide this with is “Assurant”. They said there’s a $100 deductible on claims and any licensed garage can do the work. (Said some garages actually do the claims directly and you don’t have to pay anything besides the deductible).

    I’m more concerned about the tedious things like that 11” display going out or something. The mechanical aspect I’m fairly confident it’s ok, but the fact that this one is there upgrade with the tech package.....

    Hey Acadianer, greetings from a fellow Canuck. :) Sounds like you are in the Maritime provinces based on your user name?

    Certainly sounds like a good deal. $11K off the price for 1+ year old (even with high-ish mileage) seems decent, I saved about $9K on my 2014 PIP when it was 2 years old (and 39K) when I bought it (based on the provincial rebates in Ontario at the time). Your car has lots of nice accessories too which is a bonus.(y)

    I wouldn’t be concerned about the mileage, particularly considering your low mileage needs. Prius vehicles are virtual tanks that run forever; my 2006 went almost 400K KM, and lots of stories of much longer than that...

    However, I would investigate that warranty closely. I have never known of a “bumper to bumper” longer than 3 years - is it possible it is 3rd party and not Toyota?

    I have thought of picking up a used Prime myself, but the deals these days are not great in Ontario. Saving $1-2K from new is simply not worth it IMO, to take a car with 10-20K mileage on it... Would rather just buy new and have no questions, and a full warranty. ;)
