    Hello Prius Fans,
Need some advice on how much to price my wife's 08 Prius. Mechanic said two cells are bad and to replace the two cells and guarantee it for one year for $1000. He would guarantee to replace any other cells within that one year too.

Prius has only 69,000 miles, new tires, cat convertor(off brand) replaced with cat security in place. Display (speed, odometer) recently replaced, 12 volt battery (three years old)

Mechanic offered to buy it from me but have no idea how much to offer.

    Thanks,
    Prunemui

13 years old and 69,000 miles is nothing for a Toyota, even a Prius. Id see what other options you have for hybrid battery replacement in your area before selling it. Theres a company called Green Bean stateside that comes to you and installs a completely reconditioned hybrid battery for around $1600. Even if you have to put a considerable amount into it it may be worth it as you could get a decent amount of years more out of the car and buying a different one in similar condition will cost you much more

Its always a gamble but it may pay off

$3000 should be fair price. The buyer can pay $1000 for battery. The fixed car would worth $5000 and buyer would save $1000 for his trouble and risk of buying a car with red triangle.

Those modules he's going to replace only cost $30 and if you or a friend want to learn how to rebuild packs we'd be happy to help... Lots of info on here.

Theres a youtube video of a guy that starts with a Prius that is in perfect condition. He takes everything apart pulls the battery and replaces with another battery in 15 minutes. Plenty of videos also show how to check diagnose and replace bad cells. To get 2 cells you may have 150 into the getting them (including rush shipping)

There are a number of guys here that can talk you though it also. So my suggestion would be tell mechanic drop his price considerably or you are going to do it yourself

Swaps a pack in 12 minutes and 30 seconds to be exact. Once you've swapped enough packs and watch this video you'll discover loads of techniques from this guy to speed up the process.

I'll take doing a job correctly over doing a job fast. Cutting corners to save a few minutes is disrespectful to the customer.

Maybe pay a PriusChat member $400 air fare and a place to stay, have them replace the modules. Just saying.

Priuscamper take a holiday, do some camping.

Portland to Honolulu return $400 Hawaii Airlines

Yes... He specifically says that this is his own Prius and he wouldn't do this with the hundreds of customers cars he's swapped packs on... His techniques in this video are extremely helpful, especially the one about putting all the bolts in by hand first and then tighten them down. If you want to do a good job and clean everything as you go it can take an hour or more to swap a pack.

A plane ticket to Hawaii to repair a Prius sounds like a fair trade, but I don't think things would go well with TSA when they looked at what I brought to do that work in my suitcase.

$5000 would be quite the deal for 60k miles. Still going around 4000 when they have 150-200k and clean.

Don't rebuild it they don't last. Get used OEM that is still good at car-part for around $800 or just get new from toyota (I think around $1700 last I checked)

Takes my mechanic 1 hour to change the battery so labor is very easy and dirt cheap (unless dealing with a scammer)

I would say $5000 firm needing battery with 60k miles....assuming in great condition.

If desperate or trying to give someone a deal or in a race to dump it then 3-4k.....But usually start high I'd list $5200 and say you can do 5k.

He also talks about his back surgery scars and then uses some of the absolute worst techniques I've ever seen for slinging around an 83 pound battery. That also was not the first time that battery has been swapped in that car. First times are always a bit slower as the fasteners are usually significantly tighter. Often, my Dewalt impact driver won't budge several of the battery mounting bolts or seat mounting bolts, but on a previously swapped battery, it never misses a beat. I've never noticed a significant difference between the Milwaukee I use at work and the Dewalt I have for batteries. All that being said, I have heard nothing but good about hope this helps, and there's no way I would ever even be competitive against him in a swap race, lol..unless he broke his back halfway through.

yeah, always more to learn, unless you start bragging about what battery packs did to your back while demonstrating the kind of pack slinging that did the damage in the first place like he did. And when it comes to impact drivers, that indeed is a huge time saver. But am still finishing up my cheap tool stage so not sure how to wade into those waters of the #1 multipurpose scredriver/impact driver. I think I'd be better off getting my air compressor wired up and going pneumatic like my upbringing.

Hello! It am in New Zealand; I got a few cells from a few batteries over the last 6 years; don’t give the car away, *but* if PriusChat members want it, check them out here to see if they are enthusiasts. People don’t value Priuses with dead or faulty batteries; so much so that I got 3 faulty batteries and one ‘pop’ battery; I fixed my two Priuses and am experimenting with the spare cells!

I doubt you are, but if you are in NZ, I will buy above market price to add to my Prius museum collection :)

Thanks for replying. I'll going to get a second opinion from another garage. Will let you know what the final outcome is.
