    I've seen lots of posts that worry about this unfounded fear, but never seen one telling about it actually happening. Do you have an example? Any actual survey results? I only bought gas twice last year. Never a moment's trouble.

    No. When I say “market” or “market share” in this context I am taking about the light duty vehicle new sales market in the USA.

    @fuzzy1, thanks. Those are good. The one I was thinking of is years old and was focused on EV market share.

    I have added gas to my Prime only twice in the 13 months I have had it and I have no concerns about the gas going bad. The owners manual says I only need to add gas once a year. So what do you know that Toyota doesn’t? Maybe you should contact them and educate them.

    I recall the old thread as well. Depending on the source, a few different numbers reported but in the same ballpark. Oak Ridge National Laboratory says peak for hybrids was in 2013 at 3.2%

    I always thought the "bad gas" argument was an urban legend....assuming the tank is sealed properly, etc...

    World wide Plug-ins (bevs and phevs) are greatly outselling non-plug-in hybrids (just hybrids for the rest of this post). Japan sells over a million hybrids more than plug-ins. China and Europe are the biggest plug-in markets and are enough to have plug-ins outsell hybrids worldwide. The US the numbers are similar between the 2. In 2018 plug-ins outsold hybrids, but both bevs and hybrids have grown since then, with a drop in phevs in the US. In 2019 hybrids in the US again outsold plug-ins. 2020 this also appears to be the case but car companies have stopped reporting hybrids separately, toyota doesn't even break up prius prime versus prius, so I haven't seen a good hybrid estimate. Next year I expect toyota, bmw, and ford, etc to get their improved phevs in dealerships. BEV sales should also be growing rapidly then as battery supply issues are resolved and costs to manufacture continue to fall as more models are available. Hybrids may also rise quickly if you include the mild 48V hybrids that will take over europe. In the mid 2030s Japan has outlawed cars without batteries (it will all be hybrids, plug-ins, and fuel cell vehicles).

    Oslo does indeed have the most plug-ins per capita. Shanghai has the most plug-ins of any city, LA may be second. metro LA has 8x the population of metro Oslo, so I would not call this capital city small it is much smaller than many plug-in cities. Shanghai has a higher population than LA but I believe fewer cars.

    I'm not sure this has much to do with the thread. I guess the author of the tesla post on a tesla blog really likes his prius prime. It is a very different car than his tesla model S. His wife has a tesla model Y. Between the 2 of them they still own a tesla and use very little gasoline. Choice is good.

    Because I can easily do 200 miles round trip on the weekends hiking, I'm not too concerned! I have to fill up my Prime about once a month (guesstimating).

    :ROFLMAO: I'm sure the world's most successful car company will be interested in being schooled on their product.

    The old gas concern is about the ethanol eating uo lines and destroying parts. Allegedly. I don't believe in bad gas after I let my 240sx sit in storage with no motor on Bush Jr gas and got it back on the road during Obama second term. Same gas.

    I don't even think in the US that the Primes are readily available in all states. I know when they first debuted in 2017, people had a hard time finding them.... wondering how Toyota decides where they are releasing what products. Maybe they target states who offer incentives in addition to the federal incentives.

    (I am not fact-checking this -- but I believe there are some kind of carbon tax breaks Toyota can get in the US by selling certain numbers of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-approved hybrids / BEVs, which balances out the number of gas-guzzling Tacomas & Tundras they sell. If Australia doesn't offer such a program, then maybe Australia isn't a priority for the Prime.)

    In the southeast states they are almost unavailable at dealerships. But that's not a Toyota thing; it's a Morgan Automotive Group decision since they are the private company that distributes Toyotas in the southeast. They don't like Primes for some reason. The dealer closest to me gets maybe 2-3 of them a year. I understand that it's similar in the Gulf states. Both are privately owned distributorships.

    Just a wild, unfounded guess: Big Oil? I'd be curious to see compared to other U.S. states, what proportion of PHEVS and BEVs are sold in the south.... and do these states offer tax incentives for driving these vehicles?

    The air quality here is much, much cleaner than where I grew up on the banks of the Mississippi. We got both the pollution blowing in from Houston and from the barge traffic on the river. (Seattle's air quality is bad only when the forests are on fire.)
