Ioniq 5 News Thread

I just found what I think is a show stopper for the Ionic 5 and related. It's the wheels and tires. P255 45R20. Why choose super low reliability (because of the low profile) super expensive wheels and tires? There are tons of videos and reports of people popping Model 3 Performance tires and damaging the 20 inch wheels on pot holes - a greater than $2,000 stranding event. I looked up the cost. The same model tire is $114 on my Prime and $283 at this size from the same company.

Ridiculous.

 

Low profile tires and large wheels are the trend now for all car types that aren't entry level models. Just going up in trim means larger wheels. The Prius, and other fuel economy first models, might be the only ones that don't do so.

 

Huh - the problematic Model 3 tires are P235 35R20s. Maybe these 45s are enough taller to avoid the popped tires and broken wheel problems the Model 3 Performance has. Still doesn't avoid the extra $676 per set for tires though.

 

That it's a trend doesn't make it any less stupid, especially on a car that isn't primarily designed for the track.

 

Being stupid hasn't stopped people from opening their wallets.

 

It might do exactly that for me. In fact, I am considering a Bolt instead of an Ioniq 5 or EV6 for just this one reason. Those tires are $170 vs $282.

 

Looks like the EV6 will have large wheels too.

 

If the starting price for Ioniq5 and EV6 is ~$45K as predicted in some articles I read, I will look elsewhere for my first BEV.

 

Maybe the same? Lots of info out there says it's basically the same car as the Ioniq 5 but with a different body and interior.

Sadly, the Bolt doesn't have true fast charging or a HUD. I don't think fast charging is necessary for in-town use but it's essential for out-of-town use and, to me, a HUD is pretty essential.

 

Huh. I read $38k, but whatever, they aren't out yet.

 

Yeah, if $38K is the starting MSRP then it can be a contender for Bolt EUV Starting at $33,995, but if the price is with a $7500 tax credit, then I don't know. Car and Driver estimated the price for both cars to be starting around $45K.

Every single vehicle on the market has +'s and -'s.

If indeed it has those tires and rims and the customers don't like them the manufacturer will make a change to the model to satisfy customer demand

Me, I would check the options for different wheels and if they weren't available work with a dealer to make a deal with the dealer providing different rims and tires if everything else fit my needs.

Dealers are more and more agreeable to this sort of suggestion in these highly competitive times. Hyundai and Kia are know to bend over backwards to put the customers needs first

Example Hyundai - KIA vehicles come with Apple Car Play, Android Car Play ,KIA UVO (voice and app link). Hyundai Blue link (voice and app link).

their regular vehicle also come with interactive viewscreen, knobs and steering wheel controls.

Customer choice on how to interact with the car not a manufactures demand on how you must interact.

If this one doesn't fit your needs hold on to your hat there are 10 more electric models coming. My impression of KIA and Hyundai is they won't stop until they have a model for every customers needs.

If that's not enough Hyundai kicks in 3 years free maintenance.

More and more car choices make for a competitive market that helps the customer get what they want. I look forward to every new electric vehicle introduction as a win for the customer and applaud the manufacturer for offering the new model.

 

Even the Aptera is going to have a 16” rim, my 2000 Insight has 14”

when vehicles have terrible tires it causes me to open my wallet and buy $25 junkyard rims, paint them black and buy tires in a size I want (ideally 15”)

The Ioniq 5 seems like an oversized SUV like thing which puts it on my avoid list.

though if you want to play with your life you could mount ep500’s, inflate to sidewall max

the closest I will get to an electricified insight is the Aptera but I’m not holding my breath

The plush foam filled steering wheel is equally terrible reminding me of the deteriorating 80’s steering wheels that you would wrap with those easily soiled black covers

Creepy that you'd be dissuaded from buying a car by artwork.

The people who have seen one in person have commented that the interior materials seem of good quality.

 

So you are saying you like it? Personally, I rather do like it. Frankly, what I don't like is the monolithic tablet look of Tesla, Prius Prime, etc...

As for the rim/tire discussion, we have low profile tires on our Hyundai Elantra GT as they came with the package. While they look nice...I hate 'em! Really makes the ride a whole lot rougher...especially for a small hatchback.

 

If that was the case, a smaller wheel with tire of the same overall diameter would work just as well. These choices are mostly for looks.
