Swapping in a Gen 4 Prius' 2ZR Engine into the Prius v

    I think the water pump pushes the water into the thermostat warming it up and opening it. I don't think it would suck the coolant in as it would be sucking in cold water which would not open the thermostat in any case is that thermostat reusable from the Gen 3 to the Gen 4?

    Whenever you see that distinctive shape of a centrifugal impeller in a pump or a blower, you know which way the flow is: sucking in at the center, along the axis, and centrifugally thrown outward from the impeller into the volute of the pump.

    The thermostat here is behind the central axis of the pump, so yes, it does suck water through the thermostat. You're not wrong to wonder about the water temperature there. But the cooling system design includes enough 'bypass' flow that the thermostat does get warm enough to open when it should.

    Can anybody recommend a shop in Houston that could do this? Every place that I have called say’s that the engines are not Interchangeable.

    Could mine really be bad the engine only has ten k on it.

    In the Data List, what's showing for the requested RPM and the pump RPM?

    Not sure where do I find that? Also when does this prius warn you it's overheating? It got to 122 i Pulled over shortly after.

    Data List is one of the buttons at the left of the window, after you've selected "Engine and ECT".

    Celsius? Yikes.

    The most I know so far is in this thread over here. The Repair Manual says that if the car has reported a code for a water pump malfunction, it will shut down the engine at 105 ℃. I have not found anything in the manual that talks about how hot is allowed if a pump code hasn't been reported. I experimented back in December with running my engine up as far as 107 ℃ when there wasn't a problem with the pump, and there was no shutdown and no warning. 107 was where I chickened out, so I don't know what happens above that.

    Mine's a liftback, not a v, for what it's worth.

    The 4th gen pump is slightly different ;).

    @RightOnTime did a side by side in the not too distant past:).

    But they do fail over time, so if the mileage is high, do the swap (y).

    I'm going to check rpm on pump tonight, what should it be at? If good I think thermostat might be bad cause car got hot 115 f. And lower radiator hose from thermostat was cold. Else could be this grey thing restricting flow. This is past the goose neck. IMG_20210306_135908.jpg upload_2021-3-10_9-36-14.png

    You know I had my TIS subscription paid up a weekend or two ago when I wanted to look up some things, and it totally didn't occur to me to download the Gen 4 New Car Features engine section. I have enough questions about what they changed Gen 3 to Gen 4 I need to remember to download that next time I feed them $20.
