I used a breaker bar on that 14mm multi-pointed socket to gently loosen those bolts myself

 

Lol. Italian tune-up is scarily accurate. . Yeah, 32 pages deep I can imagine it's hard to keep up.

I actually have a Ryobi 18v impact wrench that blasted them off in seconds. Without a high torque tool like that, I can imagine it would be a major pita as they are locked in there darn good.

 

I wonder if there's some size of double hex socket (or triple square?) for the flywheel bolts, sim to head bolts. For the latter there IS a double hex spec'd in repair manual, but as far as I can see nothing mentioned for the flywheel bolts.

 

Heat application to those bolts might be prudent; could you possible take the bolt head off (and then you're REALLY screwed)? I know torching is recommended for Red Loctite.

 

I’ll do that probably tomorrow and see what is going on.

 

Someone here is saying that 3 bond 1324 (one thread lock that Toyota spec’s) is equivalent to Blue Loctite 242, the loctite that is easier to remove.

Reading further, the debate goes on.

 

Most likely caused by a malfunctioning EGR. Sometimes, unplugging the EGR will make it run well.
I must admit your car sounded terrible. I was speachless.

@Ragingfit That's actually my thought as well. My EGR was effectively 100% blocked when I disassembled the original engine. Had I not already had a replacement gen4 sitting in the garage, I would have just swapped out the EGR first as I'm pretty sure that was actually the cause of my issues, not a blown head gasket as I assumed. But it's done now and I'm happy to have a more reliable engine installed as I plan on keeping this car until it falls apart.

My theory is that the Gen 4 water pump runs much cooler and is less prone to have issues versus its counterpart

2 months later, last night I finished, said a prayer and started her up- she fired right up! Sounded like a diesel for a minute but smooth since! No CELs!
While bleeding the coolant, I noticed a small leak under the car under the EGR area..I looked all around and couldn't exactly find where it came from, so I am hoping it's a trailing leak along the bottom from the reservoir area. I'll investigate more later after my shift, but I'm relieved the new engine started

Im doing the swap on the my gen 3 with the Gen 4 motor Im a bit confused im going to use all the gen three parts except on confused on how to connect the cooling system as the 3 has a straight pipe and the four has an angle gooseneck. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Ragingfit's yt series pretty much covers the whole swap- take some time to watch them and I am sure your answers will be covered

*hint= Parts 11, 12 and 13 cover the 8 inch galvanized pipe and tee-connector to add another coolant hose to the throttle body ( I took notes LOL)

 

I have the part with the sensor does that mean I need more parts?

 

anyone know what that grey sensor is? I hope not another thermostat. Anyone see this before?

 

Watch...the...videos. I’ve a vague recollection there’s some sensor just along for the ride, but yeah.

 

I believe the Gen 4 has 3x coolant sensor, the Gen 3 just uses 2.

 

yea cause I see it in the video on the goose neck but the video does not have one where mine does its freaking me out! lol

 

The Gen 4 also has an oil level sensor that will not get plugged in either.
