The CAT you took off was 12 years old and presumably had seen a LOT of miles.
It might have been wearing out. They don't last forever and sometimes plug up when old.

My theory is people who go to oil change places that refill Prius with too much oil not only causes bad MPG, but it clogs the Cat, especially if they go way too long between oil changes. Any chance you car could qualify for this possibility?

I had a non-OEM CAT installed after mine got stolen in November 2018 in London, UK while I was attending a funeral function.
My insurance company wisely installed a Klarius non-OEM CAT as a replacement, which has worked perfectly.
Indeed, last summer, I managed for the first time ever, 68.1 mpg from a tank of fuel, and also got 641 miles (UK) from that same tank of fuel. I could have reached 650 miles as there was still 1.5 litres of fuel in the tank when I filled up.
I'm putting those figures down to the non-OEM Klarius Catalytic Converter (I believe made in the EU - according to the Klarius website).

Did you really sell that old hunk of metal for $1300...or did you mean $130?

Surely you meant $130 for scrapping the converter?

Maybe there's a high demand in certain States, for an intact, OEM Cat, California for instance? I believe it's techinically illegal to install a used Cat, but I'm guessing it can and is done, and will get you through a smog inspection, say if yours is failing, or has been butchered by Cat theft.

Many people on this webpage have sold their OEM CAT for that price.

I’m surprised many people don’t seem to understand what is fuelling the catalytic converter thefts from Generation 2 Prius vehicles.

When these catalytic converters were originally designed for these cars, they, like the vehicles themselves were over engineered.
They were stuffed with a very high content of precious metals - primarily Palladium, Rhodium, Platinum. Other rare metals include Cerium, Manganese and nickel.

These rare metals were used in exceptionally high quantities in most Japanese catalytic converters from around that era.
The cost of those metals were cheaper back then. Today, some of those metals are worth much, much more than GOLD by weight, literally - hence the thefts.
    It’s easier than gold mining.
I’d wager in the UK, all the stolen Prius cats were stolen to order by a particularly clever group of continental thieves who had their own smelting equipment and engineers.
They extracted the high value rare metals themselves and sold them on the market for a very high price, cutting out the middle man.
I suspect today, the cost of the rare metals inside the original Prius OEM cats is worth much, much more than the price they are sold for, by the manufacturer - considering they were manufactured in bulk about a decade ago.

So removing an OLD Toyota cat and replacing it with a NEW non-'Yota part does not mean the new part is "better". Geez.

Since when is replacing a clogged OEM cat with a new aftermarket cat not an improvement? Your comment makes no sense unless you're comparing brand new OEM vs. brand new aftermarket.

I noticed a bit more mpg and the meter shows 1-2 more ( a lot more noticeable in warmer weather 70-80 degrees), can go longer on a tank before filling up, does anyone else notice the 50kw regen logo more and more? On a normal 30 min drive I only get a couple full regen symbols, now its like every 2-3 regen symbols for every bar. Not sure if this will cause damage to the battery by the constant regeneration, I can only assume its running more efficiently now due to either an old cat vs new.
