    wondering if anyone can help—

    i am seriously considering purchasing a 2012 Prius Plug-in advanced, but would really like to add an Apple Carplay unit and am wondering the following;

    -Will the onboard backup camera work? i’m seeing all sorts of different outcomes but am wondering if the original will work.

    -Steering wheel controls is a must for me— and i want to make sure that it’ll still work with the multi-information display and with AC as well as phone buttons.

    -The model i’m looking at has Heads-Up display, wondering if this addition would mess with that or the multi information display.

    -Lastly, what was the cost to the folks who’ve done this extra parts/labor wise?

    Hopefully someone can help me, curious if anyone’s done this before. I have it in my current 2nd gen but technology has changed quite a bit from gen 2 to gen 3. It’s also worth mentioning that CarToys or Bestbuy will being doing the install as i have little to no knowledge on installation with stereos. Has anyone used either company before?

    Thanks! excited to see if anyone has any answers to this.

    welcome!

    i don't recall anyone ever having done this. you'd be well advised to find a seller/installer who would guarantee it.
    we se a lot of disappointed folks who change their h/u and something or other doesn't work

    I did this switch in mine back in 2015. Works great. You'll want the iDataLink and the firmware for your model. Backup camera works as the unit will supply the 6v the OEM camera needs. I don't believe anyone has made a harness To keep the OEM mic working sadly as it requires phantom power, so you'll need to use the mic that comes with the new headunit. Modern iDataLink units will give you a bunch of gauges on the head unit display too. I would make sure to get one of the newer ones that has wireless CarPlay, mine predates that ability but I plan on replacing it shortly so I can have wireless. You'll need the Axxxis adapter for your model and year too, which will keep all your steering wheel controls functional too :)

    Overall I love it and now plan on doing it to my wife's Sienna too. Have fun with it.

    Go to Crutchfield online. I'm not allowed to post a link yet. I have investigated this same idea for my 2013 Prius. They have the kit and all the adapters to accomplish what you are asking for an additional cost (about $200 I believe), but it'll integrate about everything, if not all of it. Their tech support is really good after the sale as well.

    Your existing camera can be made to work with any replacement head unit.

    Never seen the head up display option so no clue how that might be affected.

    I have seen Best Buy butcher a few installations. I'd highly recommend finding a local shop vs. a national chain. You can sometimes find them in dealer directories for Kenwood, Pioneer & other high end autosound brands. They used to make a bigger deal out of accrediting good local shops. They still do it, but people don't notice as much anymore.
