It's very unlikely that you would be rear-ended if there were cars around. I can't imagine anyone hitting someone from behind during a left turn. Moreover, you're least likely to be injured in a rear-end collision. Front and side collisions are far more dangerous.

If you connect an iPhone, I've read here at PC in the last couple days that the mac connect thingie can also cause the MFD (Multi Functional Display - 7 or 11 inch screen) to crash, needing a reboot the only way to fit it. It may also cause other issues with the car.

I haven't heard anything yet about it effecting the functions displayed by the MID (Multi Informational Display - where most of the Warning screens are displayed (at least on my Prime Plus or the newer LE trim), but that might be a possibility.

Update 2. The dealership called and they could not reproduce the emergency braking issue. They were also not able to reproduce the Multimedia system crash. They did not seem willing or able to pull the information from the ECU which records adverse events.

They were able to identify a cause for the constant beeping of the right parking sensor, it was being affected by the oversized license plate frame. Changing the frame made this issue go away. That's it for now folks!

The 11.6-inch multimedia head unit on my 2020 Prius Prime XLE Classic Silver Metallic crashed all the time. I don't think the one on my 2021 Prius Prime Limited Blue Magnetism has ever crashed. The functioning of the TSS features has nothing to do with it.

License-plate frames are hideous, unnecessary, and illegal. I've taken off mine.

That’s interesting, thanks for reporting back. Out of curiosity, how “oversized” was this plate frame? That seems surprising to me. Do you have a picture of it, either mounted on the car or off? At least you have solved the issue (hopefully), which is what is most important. (y)

Was it their advertising frame, or your own frame? Hopefully you aren't being charged for diagnostics on something caused by their advertising.

As for pulling event details, something that doesn't trigger any airbags or other crash response probably doesn't get kept in the official 'black box' or event data recorder. We know from the Sudden Unintended Acceleration fiasco a decade back, that additional detail of less serious events is kept, at least temporarily, in some ECU. A fraudulent alleged SUA episode was caught that way, from a customer who wanted out of his contract so created a long-running incident. But pulling that information may be beyond the ordinary authority or ability of normal dealerships.

Kind of a blanket statement. I have a nice dealer supplied front frame that keeps the plate from getting munged in the car wash. It’s very unobtrusive. I’m also in a state that requires both plates be displayed.

I was not charged for their diagnostics.

The plate frame s not with the car anymore. Since this dealership is >35 minutes away, I probably won't return to ask about it.

I did provide feedback regarding the 70+ miles the car was driven during their testing and the fact that all the setup selections I had made for the system were changed including the time of day on the clock and the car was left in Power (PWR) mode. Odd seeing that, since I would have thought the car would be tested in the mode the owner said it was throwing the errors. Maybe they did this and left it in PWR as the final tested mode. Would have been nice to at least correct the clock, which the service manager said was due to them disconnecting the battery to reset the system.

Hopefully nothing! What I like with our other Prius models is how few, if any, issues we have had with our cars.

It was sunny yesterday and nearly 50 degrees F so I decided to give the car a good bath and once over. I usually garage my car, and after picking it up from the dealership, it was covered with dirt. I did find it odd that they had to disconnect the battery to reset everything. I am not familiar with the diagnostic software a Toyota dealership would have, but I know from running the diagnostics on with a OBDII device on our other cars ranging from my son's Subaru Outback, Mazda Miata, and my wife's Volvo that any codes could be reset via the software, not by pulling off a battery lead, which normally just delays any codes from returning when the ECU runs through all its diagnotics. I am definitely done with this dealership.

Please provide the location so we can look at it in maps. I've had false positives in other vehicles with the front braking feature and it's usually because the angle of the road ahead looks like an object to these basic systems. Raised railroad beds/tracks close to an intersection is my most common false positive.

One reason for them: license plates USED to be painted, and pretty much lasted forever. Now they use some sort of lamination process, and weathering starts then peeling, regular as winter.

I was in the take ‘em off school, but noticed the pealing, put the frames back on, somewhat belatedly, to hopefully protect and slow it down.

I was where the red car is located. There is a left turn arrow at this intersection.

THANKS so much, that really helps. Looks to me like an incline; especially when viewed a couple of car links back from that red car.

On the contrary, details of even minor events—such as activation of the anti-lock braking or pre-collision system, or sudden braking by the driver—are stored in the airbag ECU assembly, which functions as the event data recorder (EDR). These records can be retrieved using a specialized readout device or a Toyota Techstream diagnostic system, available to dealers and the public.

See my previous posting, and also the Repair Manual (more info), under Vehicle Interior: Supplemental Restraint Systems: Airbag System: Vehicle Control History, which has a list of the event types and the data stored for each one. In the Techstream software, the stored data are accessed under Body Electrical > SRS Airbag > Utility > Vehicle Control History.

Here’s an example of a “PCS operation history” event from my car, for which I’ve selected to plot some of the time-series data that were saved for a few seconds before and after the event:

    TechstreamPCSOperationHistory.png

I was driving at 23 MPH (Vehicle Speed) and closed on a target ahead (Target Relative Velocity), causing the PCS warning to activate (ALM Request Flag). I released the accelerator pedal (Accelerator Opening Ratio), applied the brakes (Brake SW, Brake Oil Pressure), and the car slowed (Longitudinal G Sensor Signal). I’ve turned off the default smoothing of the plots, to show how the data are sampled. You can also export a CSV file to make your own plots.

I would never have guessed the sampling rate would be so coarse. 450 ms??

There are a few event types—ABS/VSC/TRAC, sudden braking, and sudden turning, for example—that use a 150 ms rate, but 500 ms is usual, at least for vehicle control history data. The collision data use higher sampling rates, according to the paper by Iyoda et al. linked from my previous posting.

The vehicle control history and collision data are stored separately, at least on some models, and I’m not sure if the latter can be retrieved using a Techstream system, or only by using the Bosch CDR tool.

All dealer license-plate frames are hideous. Purchased frames also tend to be hideous. Moreover, if the frame covers any information or parts of the numbers (such as the top and/or bottom edges), it's illegal.

That said, I saw this extremely elegant Tesla OEM license-plate frame on a Model 3 yesterday. Now, this is what a license frame should be: very thin, goes around and doesn't cover any part of the plate, chrome-plated, and the holes are behind and not visible! Tesla even gets the license-plate frames right. LOL

Does it keep the plate from pealing more loud and deep?
