Not really as many of us can hold more than one opinion at a time. Just use the right tool for the right job.

You can't disagree with a factor of economics. To grow beyond niche or monopoly, whatever it is must be adopted by a competitor. Otherwise you end up in a propriety trap, nightmare of incompatible hardware. We've seen it before, many times with the tech industry. Some type of standard is required. SAE-J1772 worked great. Why not push for something shared within an entire region (North America, Europe, China, India, etc)? After all, it opens up opportunity for third-parties to join in... further stimulating growth. That also helps keep the market stable longer, a win for everyone.

Think about chargers at retail, grocery, restaurants, coffeeshops, theaters, libraries, etc. It is far easier to get them to invest, knowing the tech will reach a maximum range of customers. Offering chargers that are Tesla only means targeting only Tesla owners. You have to agree with that. It's a fact, not an opinion.

Put it this way, what will be the draw once the variety of connection types all reach a point of diminishing return... like each offering 200 kW service? Location will get more attention. How many choices of grocery store do you have? Wouldn't the ability for an apartment dweller to recharge once a week while shopping be quite a draw? Wouldn't the grocery owner want to appeal to a maximum number of customers like that?[/QUOTE]

excellent !! looking forward to seeing more - once it gets off the sketch pad.
    It is true ... there was a time we all knew that "Toyota doesn't play all their cards at once". That was back during the heyday of the hybrid Prius. Modernly? Not so much. Look how much PR is going into Toyota letting the world know "we're gonna have Solid State Batteries" (actually it's Panasonic) - when in fact, it's years away, at the earliest - and far from any guarantee if & when SS happens, others won't be right there. Here's a link showing how many manufacturers are working on SS - though Toyota is the only one NOT holding cards to their chest;
Toyota Preps Electric Car Prototype With Solid State Battery for 2021

... just released - news (never mind the 2 million already) that Tesla produce 1/2 million last year alone, & growing - with more & more factories coming on line.
As to Tesla niche ... "the who" (Tesla) ... when is 'the who' no longer going to be branded as "the what" (niche). Knowing that number, if Lexus ever makes millions of EV's ... it'll be known that "the what" is "X" amount of millions ... somewhere above 2 million. But impasse? How is accelerating product, an impasse.

Tesla must be come part of a standard?
Last time i was in the UK ... my tea kettle was 240V unlike the usa. The Television over there ran on 50mhz ... Parts of Japan have 100v & some parts have different phase (50hz vs 60hz). The world's commercial & residential power plugs differ from country to country . Holding Tesla to a higher standard? Wondering why all the worry, if Tesla is only a niche.

An EU directive from 2014 effectively made CCS2 the standard of the land. It also laid the ground work for a more rational expansion of public charging networks, with chargers going to where they are needed, instead of the hodge podge method going on in the US. This, and larger EV adoption, has lead a larger network of third party CCS2 chargers, than in the US. So Tesla switched to allow their customers to more easily use those other networks.
Standardization Of EV Charging In The EU

In the US, the Supercharger network is still the most extensive DC charging network. Which is a bigger advantage than in Europe considering the greater area. With real BEV competition starting to show up, maybe CCS will become the norm, or maybe others will sign up with Tesla; the latest Aptera prototypes have been seen using Superchargers. Eitherway, I think Tesla will get by.

If those businesses are the ones actually putting up the chargers, they are doing so mainly to generate foot traffic. They want people to linger. They are more likely to install AC Level 2 J1772 than pay thousands more DC chargers.

A single DC standard would be helpful, but the US government has decided to stay out of it. With Nissan going with CCS here for their next BEV, it looks like we'll be using CCS/Supercharger in the near future.

Adapter, yes. Do not open SuperChargers withgout paying Tesla. Let the rest stew in their CCS-1 h*ll of their own desires.

works on some ... not on others.
    (sigh)
reminds me of Tesla's CHAdeMO adapter ... which would work on some, but not all appliances ... only thinh is - the Tesla branded CHAdeMO adapter - is/was capable of being software upgraded so as to work on ALL appliances ... as ours was upgraded, once eventually more & more DC QC's from different manufacturers came to market.

3rd party? Manufacturer is 5K - 7K miles away? A Chinese appliance? notorious company that isn't know for their quality on their DC chargers?
    Good luck with warranty work.

often one might say, "you get what you pay for" ... only this company - you don't even get that.
maybe best to wait for Tesla's version.
    ;)

I'm not a potential customer because the existing SuperCharger network augmented by distribution, J1772, and NEMA 14-50 plugs fully meets my requirements. Perhaps @Lee Jay might consider it but I suspect not.

    • Ozark AK - a common, L2 stop on the way. Now it is a SuperCharger.
    • Lowell AK - a great split between either Tesla or Joplin.
I've not used these two, yet. Holly and I had stayed overnight at the Super 8 at Russellville AK.

Range is 1/4 and price likely 2x what they need to be for me to be interested.
