I couldn't read the NYT article behind the paywall. But probably this is a similar article.

Yeah, it all comes down to funding. Scientists aren't volunteers. One point about the VUI 202012/01 variant strain, it may have not originated in the UK. The UK just happens to identify the strain due to its nationally backed genomic epidemiology project. Trying to prevent inflex of the British to a country at this point may not be useful.

Trying deleting all nytimes.com cookies, then try the link again. They give a few freebies per time period. Users can arbitrarily shorten that time period. Or even automate the process for other privacy reasons.

Yeah, I know the trick. I use the trick if I really want to read it free. But in most cases, I just look for another source. The same goes with the site that requires whitelisting the site on my adblocker. I would rather not read the article even free if I have to put up with relentless ads.;)

For lockdown purposes I bought a Roku stick, which of course required me to set up an account and link my email address. Then I watched some 'free' programming (for the price of several minutes of uninteresting ads per hour).

Now my email has begun receiving spam from some of the same outfits that were advertising on Roku ... even though there was absolutely no choice on my part whose ads I saw, and no reason to think I was interested in anything they advertised. o_O

I now have cookie auto-delete, allowing only those from specific sites that I select, to remain. E.g. Priuschat, sites where I do have paid subscriptions, my financial providers, etc.

Such trials will require much larger sample sets and longer phase timelines. Having such trial results as a precondition to mass rollout, would necessarily push back mass rollout very severely. At a time when the world is running 8000 to 13000 deaths per day from this, 2000 to 3000 deaths per day in our own country, there would be major ethics problems with delaying mass rollout until such large trials have run to their endpoints.

Remember that these vaccines are still under EUA, emergency use authorizations, not full unconditional approvals. Larger and more thorough trials can and should continue. With multiple vaccines in the pipeline, we should get flexibility to pick and choose among them later, pulling back any versions that don't produce a sufficient longer term benefit.

Does this include more tracing such as lot number, inoculation, and patient tracking?

    Thanks,
    Bob Wilson

I don't know. I have seen the EUA comments mostly in the context that employers or schools or others who might have power to mandate their people to get vaccinated, cannot do so while the EUAs are still in place. They must wait until standard approvals are completed.

Now that we are at year's end, here are the latest provisional all-cause death figures. Check back at one and two more months for much more solid numbers, though they will still not be final until sometime in 2022.
That CDC chart and spreadsheet, Excess Deaths Associated with COVID-19, now show 3,172,000 all-cause deaths for Jan1-Dec19. Extrapolating out for the 31st, 12 more days, suggests about 3,250,000 deaths for the full year.

The other CDC table, Provisional Death Counts for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is very definitely an undercount for the most recent weeks because of the normal report processing pipeline latency, shows 2,913,144 all-cause deaths for Jan26-Dec26. This being 30 days short of a full year, I also won't be surprised to see it exceed 3,250,000 for a full year, once the reporting pipeline catches up to settled figures.

This year's death rate surge will make for a rather strong dip in calculated life expectancies.
