    Or maybe the shipping is cheaper, or the lower cost of labor and materials means more profit, or US production is going to American sales.

    The EU and China have different regulations covering cars. Tesla couldn't just take cars made for China, and ship to Europe.

    It has just been getting started for decades now. Yet no one is willing to go on the record and say how much the fuel cell in a car costs in a flat dollar amount. All Toyota said was that they reduce costs by 95% from the previous generation. Well, the Clarity FCX of that previous generation was called a million dollar car by the press, and Honda didn't bother to correct them.

    That is exactly the point.
    They are just getting started. Meanwhile Tesla got started long ago and are way ahead, especially in terms of charging infrastructure, drive train efficiency, brand recognition, market share and more

    Hyundai only got started in the late 80’s. Look at them now. No reason Toyota or other Legacy manufacturers won’t surpass Tesla in a few years.

    Both Kia & Hyundai have certainly passed Toyota over ... in the race to BEV's. Odd anyone would want to bring up that sore subject to Toyota.

    Just showing that the race has just begun and just because Tesla seems to be in the lead does not make them the winner in coming years. Run and sell before you regret it.

    VW is the one making a massive venture into BEVs, and their first on the new platform was having software issues.

    By third party observers, Tesla is at least 5 years ahead of every in not just batteries, but also motors and control electronics.

    Tesla has a lead technology wise. Airbus pushed new technology for aircraft.

    Agreed. But my point is that Toyota is not out of the game just because Tesla has a 5 year lead.

    People aren't saying Toyota is out of the game because Tesla has a lead. They are out of the game because they focus on FCEV's, and only do plug ins when they are have to, and not because they want to.

    Tesla is not Toyota's enemy. Tesla is just an example that the BEV business can be successful, and that change is coming. Toyota probably could make a competitive BEV, but they are choosing not too. Hydrogen cars may or may not come to be, but BEVs are already here, and Toyota didn't line up enough batteries for what will likely one of the most PHEVs in the world.

    Sure they could. But they have to show up first. If you are late to a 100m dash you might as well not run it. If you are late to a marathon you still have a chance...but not if you are a no-show.

    Why are there so many EV startups? (Lucid, Rivian, Nikola, Faraday, Fiskar and many more)
    Not because making an EV is easy, but rather because it is difficult. It is even more difficult when you are a legacy car maker that doesn't want to cannibalize your ICE cars and your dealer business model relies on maintenance) Legacy car makers have a sales problem for EVs (and FCEV). The problem is getting sales people to know how to sell them.

    They had there own parts, but put them in a tiny 3+1 seater with less than 50 miles of range, for the price of a Leaf.:p

    A loss of drive power may increase the risk of a crash. Toyota Motor Engineering & manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Rav4 EV vehicles manufactured July 24, 2012, to August 29, 2014.

    Toyota has a great hybrid system, but unless they are working on a drop in renewable fuel for them, they aren't zero emission.

    Guess Tesla supplied a whole bunch of inverters to Toyota for the Prius then.

    Yeah and how many Prius have not experienced this. Maybe it’s from how hard a person drives their Prius that causes the overheating of the inverters. Human factor.

    That particular recall covered 59% of the cars for those years. It was just one recall regarding inverter issues and stalling. There were others covering model years back to 2010. Over 800,000 hybrids were involved in the US. Some recalls were to fix the issue after the first fix didn't work. One California dealer is alleging that the issue still isn't fixed.

    At least Toyota addresses issues and places recalls on their vehicles instead of denying issues and blames the issues on drivers such as the case in China currently with Tesla.
    That one car dealer is trying to get back at Toyota as they won’t allow the owner son to take over the franchise - something like that. So they are trying to screw with Toyota with this nonsense of a law suit. Other question?
