Tesla's shipping is different than most car makers... It's not huge ships and trains making massive deliveries that distribute to each major city. Rather, it's produce the cars and find some place to put them while they wait for trucks to haul them to the city where they'll be delivered direct to the customer. It's a much smaller scale operation and has faced many challenges. At one point a couple years back Elon said he was going to spend big on buying his own car trailers to speed up delivery times.

This is most notable to me when I drive south down the west coast and see a steady supply of big rigs hauling Teslas North...

 

Sometimes under warranty they replace the car. My coworker had his first one damaged in transit so they made another. The old one is likely sitting on a Tesla lot somewhere

 

Well yeah. For the good ones. They have to do something with the other ones.

Tesla has about 2-3 weeks of inventory compared to the industry average of > 70 days.
When you order a Tesla you get a specific VIN number and that car gets shipped and waits until you arrange your pickup date and financing.

VW needed to be punished, but it is a shame the cheaters could be exported to countries with laxer emission laws. There is an environmental cost to just building a car, and that cost has a higher impact if the car is taken off the road early.
