3rd Gen Prius Inverter failure Toyota Reply

I’m still waiting for the “Toyota reply,” so far no reply from Toyota.

 

I just went through an inverter failure, outlined here:

It was covered by the J0V recall, so was repaired for free. As I indicated in the other thread, it's interesting that some failures result in the loss of the electric side, leaving the ICE as the only source of propulsion. My symptoms were the opposite: the car could move only on electric power -- albeit at low speed. The ICE would not attempt to start at all.

 

Wow, thanks for your note.. & yes, in our case the ICE is what allowed for us to get back home. I see yours was the "V" which we also have (2012) and we drove today. I'd have expected the V to fail before her liftback.. as I have 105k on the V.. hers has just shy of 72k...

I sent an email note to the service manager at our dealership.. we've worked with him on an issue we had in the past and he made things right, but in this case he noted that there are many things that can cause that IPM/Error code type message. So, I guess we won't know if that's actually the cause or not until we get it in there.. that said, he did say if it was the IPM that indeed failed, that it would be covered.. but the car is at 9 years... and we don't have any extended warranty options on it.. so, holding my breath and hopeful that it's the IPM.. not something not covered.

 

Quick Update;

The dealership confirmed the IPM failed. It will be covered with the Warranty Enhancement.

3-5 days for the parts to arrive, so...

They also offered a loaner if we want to come back and get it.. while we commute and I've been driving my V, it would be nice to keep the 75 mile RT commute.off my vehicle which I just had serviced for the winter.. then again there's the covid worry.. not sure if it's worth the hassle.. but may consider.. (see what the wifey wants to do)

I for one am just relived they are going to fix it.

 

I'm curious, does anyone know how they repair or get to the IPM? I believe that it's inside the inverter, but do they have to remove the entire inverter to get to it, or can they change out the IPM without pulling the entire inverter? Still waiting for the parts. We opted to take them up on the loaner car.. in hopes that it would help move the repair on ours along a little quicker. The way parts are these days, it's hard to tell if the 3-5 day estimate is actually accurate or if it will drag out.. We got a 2020 or 2021 Camry.. nice car.. but missing the Prii.

 

we have the car back, ZERO cost.. and seems to be AOK so far..
& yes, apparently the entire inverter needs to come out to replace the IPM.
