Keep an eye on your lawmakers as they try to balance transportation budgets. Ohio added a $200 EV and $100 hybrid surcharge to yearly registration fees. I was shocked to get a $166 registration renewal this month. Several other states are doing it too.

Already in that world, Wisconsin’s registration on regular non-plugin hybrids doubled But what’s worse are the 1st year title + registration fee can be Over $600 depending on Bev vrs hybrid and your county.

Really need this crap rolled back and banned ata federal level

    unless...

The state can meet specific benchmarks on a basis in terms of incentives, public infrastructure and The percentage of plug ins the fleet. If they can’t meet the requirements they should be banned from charging BEV fees.

Gas hybrid taxes are already banned under equal protection laws that nobody In government cares tO follow. Yet still they keep pushing them, need a class action to shut them down.

What’s worse is while Wisconsin Republicans are Willfully refusing to have any plan to address any aspect of Covid they are also still putting forth legislation to further raise vehicle fees which is just what the unemployed need in the middle of Covid.

A $166 renewal would be a very pleasant surprise here. We surpassed that even before a special hybrid fee was added.

$166 would be considered cheap in California, be happy :)

I just paid $368 for my 2017 Prime Advanced. I got a $1800 car insurance bill (paid yearly) for it coming in December. :(

Indiana has a $50 Hybrid Supplemental Fee and a $150 Electric Vehicle Supplemental Fee in addition to regular fee. My 2010 costs 190 to register. My wife’s 2013 Edge costs 40 less for the year, thanks to that extra fee.

Does PHEV charged as EV or HV? Not that I support surcharge on EV (or PHEV at reduced rate), surcharging regular HV is very wrong. All hybrid cars use gas to operate, and many of them do not get better mpg than some fuel efficient non-hybrid cars. I strongly support surcharge based on miles driven on that car, but if that is not something doable, at the least surcharge based on the EPA rating of mpg for the model.

Im not a fan of high fees like that but at least in your state as a car ages it gets cheaper, here that only works for the “over 20” crowd

Here the non-plugin hybrid tax is almost the same as BEV, it’s just the first year that can be dramatically different

    Short sighted.
When the roads go to hell because nobody wants to pay for them, will you be getting a horse to ride on the dirt.

    Your position is ridiculous.
If you USE the roads, you should pay a share in their upkeep.

I also live in Ohio and was caught off-guard by this new $100 additional annual fee for a hybrid. (Prius V). This state has to be the orange barrel capital of the world so maybe they are putting that extra money to good use.

I am about two miles north of the Polaris mall which was a 400 acre cornfield when we moved here 30 years ago. Back then I could have taken a nap in the middle of our farm road. It only took me 5 minutes to drive the one stop sign trip to get to work. When I retired in 2008 that trip took about 50 minutes while negotiating 9 stoplights and sharing the trip with all my new friends and neighbors. The latest traffic study indicated that we now have 18,000 cars a day on our road. Where we used to have ditches on a farm road we now have a center turn lane, curbs and storm drains. The world is changing and growth is inevitable but I am not sure whether these fees and road improvements are progress or not.

You apparently can’t read, they charge non-plug ins a BEV tax and at a significantly higher rate than an economy car

    What is fair $10,000 a year $100,000 A year?
Did you read the rest? If 500 cars make the difference between roads being in good shape or not I’ll be damned.

my Cobalt and Insight pay $25-$37 annually on road tax, no one cares about them, why should I pay 10x As much on initial registration for a more efficient car?

I will repeat if the state does not meet certain criteria On progress these taxes need to be banned.
AKA If the state doesn’t have any BEVs, if the state doesn’t have any charge infrastructure and the state doesn’t provide any form of incentive they also shouldn’t be able to tax them, especially the damn Non-plug ins

less than 5% of road funding comes from private registration taxes

How prettell does this have any affect whatsoever on actual road funding?

I view this like a police raid on a kid’s lemonade stand for sales tax

That's not what you said the first time.
There was no "if" attached to your ban.

AND the Feds can't "ban" State taxes.

Maybe some adjustments need to be made some places.......but dealing with citizens who just like to rant without any real substance......LIKE YOU doesn't really help the cause any.

    A 5% impact, maybe ?

IF....the funding coming from the other 95% is falling......while usage is rising.......the shortfall has to be made up someplace.
Your "view" is warped. But that's nothing new.

Maybe you would like to come to Florida, where almost every new "highway" is a toll road.
They don't discriminate based on fuel type.

Believe it or not I am mostly OK with toll roads if they are implemented differently than IL,
primarily if they are specific controlled routes, specific interstates and pollution/ traffic control zones as they are avoidable and somewhat reflect use.

Fixed Annual registration fees I am strongly against and hybrid fees are frankly illegal and need to be overturned.

The fact that we made a special tax for a different transmission on what is otherwise a gas car is criminal.

At least that is based on actual use, and is not discriminatory.

YOU don't get to decide what is "illegal" and what is considered "criminal".
Neither of which is true in this case.
    Contact your Legislators.
Stop making false statements. THAT likely is illegal.

I don’t need to the law has been dissected already by others who were formerly involved in our state government.
it’s been spelled out in complete detail In other threads why Wisconsin’s Non-plug in hybrid tax is illegal , if you have questions About this ask member bluesite why this is.

This law is in direct opposition to existing on the book’s equal protection laws
our state uses a privately owned business To deflect Legal responsibility and freedom of information act requests .

This Tax is no different than taxing on any other feigned difference like taxing red cars more,
so just because they Can make up any law they want, does not mean It’s legal Just because they say so
Poorly implemented laws can and do get overturned with time, money and the courts.
