You need to be driving at least 400 miles a week for a hybrid to make sence......

Ya and the brake system is already going out on it........................ could fail with NO Brakes........... or burn oil and the inverter will go out...yes under warranty but still a big hassle.... especially out of town or on the Interstate. I don't get any enjoyment driving a prius....... it's just a car...nothing special but nice if gas is $2.75 and up.

That depends on the buyer's criteria.

What is your 400 mile per week based upon?

My search started with I'm selling my motorcycle. I've ridden 30 years and nearly got run over 3 times in the last year by distracted drivers. Now that I have an opening in the garage, what can I get that's great on mileage in heavy traffic, has enough room to cart my dogs to the park and reliable for under $10,000. My search started with Toyota Sienna. Honda out with their transmission issues at the mileage/age this price point gets. No Fiat Chryser Dodge products, Nissan or Kia/Hyundai. Again reliability being the decider. Well used toyota minivans in this range aren't pretty or for what I could see well maintained.

I stumbled upon the Prius V seeing another dog owner at the dog park using it for their 2 labs.

Once I started looking, even knowing the gen 3 issues, could find one in good shape for the price.

Otherwise I'd just rack up more miles on 17 Expedition. I have a pre-order of for the 2021 Bronco so keeping the mileage low on the Expy is a priority for now.

So the Prius V is great on gas, reliable if you know what issues to avoid or make sure they are part of the "silent" CSP from Toyota and have great maintenance history.

I had a 2012 Prius (not V) for a company vehicle in the past which is why I even looked in the V's direction.

If the motor requires replacement or all of the other gen issues destroy it, I'll move on to something else. Until then I'll enjoy it and report the good. If the bad shows up, I'll discuss it here too.

Don't take the bait. He (Tim) hates Prius' and hangs around here to punish himself.

Enjoy the new wheels! The vast majority of us do.

Really helpful, Tim. You made your point about what could go wrong with a Prius V. But how about some research into what percentage of the problems you identify ACTUALLY occur. I did the EGR/EGR Cooler replacement at 95,000 miles. The car has otherwise been trouble free!
