And as we get closer to the release of the redesigned 2021 Mirai ......Hydrogen is here and growing.

hmmm - 4yr old zombie thread .... who resurrected it ....
    ;)

hydrogen .... here and growing. ok
    is anyone doubting that?

Sequoias .... also here & growing.

But it took ~ 2,000 years to grow that much.
hopefully hydrogen will either make it or not ... rather than take even 1/20th that long.

Still haven't heard if the gen2 Mirai will require a safety waiver in order to be sold in the US, like the gen1.

I don’t recall any issues with Mirai- So Does Tesla have a safety waiver? Between fires and auto-pilot issues you would think so.

Beautiful. With Hydrogen vehicles watering these trees they will be around for a much longer time.

"According to Bloomberg, rule FMVSS No.305 requires automakers to isolate high-voltage parts in electric cars in the event of an accident.

The aim is to make the car safe for occupants and first-responders should the vehicle be involved in a crash.

Toyota though says its fuel-cell vehicle would be rendered inoperable in a low-speed crash if such a system was installed, and seeks a two-year exemption from legislators, allowing it to sell the vehicle in the States."

And ......The company says its car will protect occupants and first-responders in a different way, insulating cables and surrounding components such as the fuel-cell stack, motor and battery with special metal protection barriers.

Special protection barriers hasn't prevent battery fires in Tesla's.

This is known regulation in the motor vehicle code. It is why the Prius has a physical relay between the battery and the rest of the system. Apparently, Hyundai and Honda can make FCEVs work while meeting the code requirements. We can say Toyota can't, but more likely they forgot it about during the design process, and they didn't want to pay to fix it for a few thousand cars they were going to sell.

Don’t know. But for the 8k Mirai on the road, I have not heard of any issues. Car is built like a tank. 4K pound. Old school like sounding Mercedes doors. Feel extremely safe when drive.

One of the supposed advantages of a hydrogen FCEV was that the cars would be lighter than a BEV.

The Model 3 LR is just 14 pounds heavier than a Mirai with full tank. The difference in range is 13 miles. The Model 3 can carry one more person, and more cargo. Plus, it can go cross country today, if the owner wished.

2021 model will be a 5 seater (not that anyone actually needs 5 seats), will be able to go 400 miles on a tank of fuel, will be rear wheel drive and have a beautiful new design.

And it is expected to have a higher price tag. The current one is already $12k more than the Model 3 LR.

It'll have AWD, and do 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds?

Does it really matter that it can do O to 60 in under 4 secs? How fast can you drive on the freeway or local streets. It’s not that important to the average consumer. AWD is possible, just as the Prius has AWD now.

You brought up the Model S, and people are willing to pay for that performance, which has lead to Tesla's success.

How much is Toyota losing on each Mirai sold. An early statement from them said the first gen would be close in price to the Model S.
