That timeline is likely. Panasonic seemed to say in 2018 that it would be 10 years until the batteries had cost compatibility with Lion. Its likely they can do short production like the mirai and find some customers to test the technology in 2025. Still why not design it for Lion and solid state and get volume production out.

The problem is a lot worse than just fuel stations, you have fuel manufacture and if not local transport, then the packaging of tanks on the cars. To really work a breakthrough in manufacturing and probably in storage (metal hydride instead of 10,000 psi tanks) is needed.

I think tesla model 3/Y/S and Rav4 prime kill most of the arguments for huge government subsidies for hydrogen. Remember a vehicle like the rav4 prime could easily be made flex fuel and could use methanol which is easy to store and manufacture. All the feed stocks for hydrogen - hydrogen or electricity + co2 and possibly water, coal, natural gas, etc can make methanol. If made renewably what difference does it make if methanol is 38 mpge and hydrogen is 62 mpge if the methanol costs less than half the amount per gge as 10,000 psi hydrogen, and you can fill up with gasoline where there is not a methanol or hydrogen station. The model S already can go 400 miles on a charge.

 

Just can't see Toyota continuing the push the hydrogen. By 2025 the EV user base worldwide will be 6 to 10 times what it is in 2020. Trying to sell hydrogen, and all that goes with it, in any year from the present, 2025, or anytime after would be like Sony introducing Beta cassettes to the video watching public long after the wide-spread adoption of cheap DVD's and sub $100 players.

If Toyota can really do solid state batteries in a big way, I'm 100% all for it. Might not get me to buy another Toyota from a dealer, but it is the holy grail of EV's, as we see it from today's perspective. Bring it on!

These specs are open to anyone (just ask Bob Lutz) but they are not trivial.

At some point, interest will simply shift to some other preference. It's human nature. It's also a very real problem when there's a need to pump up significant volume. Market saturation is a challenge to overcome. We're seeing that now with the large selection of SUVs to choose from. Ever notice a bunch of white ones all next to each other? Despite being from different automakers, they all have a similar look... which is also starting to be dated.

Toyota can obviously ride that train just fine with Mirai for awhile, since the point is to have a FCV offering that looks good but doesn't stand out. In a few years, they'll have dedicated BEV rolling out. So, there will be shake up in consumer appeal anyway.

Ah ..... so your quoting Australian Dollars. In the USA the top of the line maybe just over $110k. So thats about $147k in Australia.

No, $147k AUD sounds great. Not that I want to spend that much on a car, nor a car that big.

Car prices can get crazy here. New YARIS (Auto) is now $25,000 - there is a cheaper manual. A RHD Silverado is listed at $114k PLUS registration and taxes. Corvette - the guesses by the Magazines - is $160k+ when it arrives.

 

Though - the Base Model is fairly well equipped - that's what mine is. The only i-Tech models I've seen are on Road Tests for Magazines.

And dealers don't negotiate much - maybe end of Calendar Year if there are 2019 models still around in 2020.

Prius I-Tech is about $34k but ours are sold by numbers, so 1 to 5 with 5 being fully loaded. So not sure where the I-Tech is to our models.

 

In the US the numbers changed a couple of years ago. L Eco, LE and XLE, and Limited are used now. I believe. Of course there are AWD variants for some trims.
