Autolock fires with rear hatch open

    Recently we came across a fun new problem. I discovered this while trying to put items into the rear of the car through the hatch.

    The car seems to still unlock with no problems, detecting the fob appropriately and unlocking when I grab the hatch release.

    However, if I don't open any of the other doors within 30 seconds, the auto lock will relock the car for me. With the hatch open. I was curious if there is some sort of sensor that is failing and not detecting that the hatch is open.

    Any thoughts on this or ideas about what I should check into? This is a 2007.

    Do you see the "Door Open" light on the dash when you open the hatch?

    On some of these cars there is an option to unlock all doors at once.

    That is the default option and is what the OP said is happening. What is unusual is that the car does not seem to know the hatch is open and auto-locks the car after 30 seconds.

    @dolj That's a good idea, I'll check on that. That would tell me if it's a sensor issue or not. Thanks! I'll post back if I find out anything else useful. I didn't find anything when searching, so maybe this will end up helping someone else too.

    Correct. "You have 30 seconds to open a door after operating the smart unlocking function. If a door is not opened by then, all the doors will be automatically locked again. The timing for the automatic door lock function can be changed. For details, contact your Toyota dealer."

    And the hatch is open – it counts as a door – so why is it auto-locking? I don't really understand the rationale, but your posts do not seem to be on point.

    @rjparker up until now, the hatch being open also prevented all doors from being automatically locked.

    @dolj You gave me the right direction, the open hatch light on the dash did not come on. Any thoughts on how to proceed?

    Check the switch in the hatch latch?

    Sounds like a hatch latch switch glitch.

    There is a light switch that is part of the back hatch actuator. If it is functional the light in the rear left should go on or off. That switch is also tied to the body ecu which likely feeds the status to the rest of the systems.

    THATS WHAT HAPPENED!!! I thought I locked my car before work to come back to my stuff everywhere and things missing because doors were unlocked. When I was driving I would occasionally hear the chime for doors open for a second as I hit a bump. Shit. At least it wasn't my fault. Dang, it still sucks. This is the second time.
