I recently had to get a new sticker for my license plate and noticed that my fee was $100 more than it was last year. On the bill, it said that there is a new $100 plate fee in Ohio for those who drive hybrid cars due to the fact that they do not buy gasoline as much as other cars. Was wondering if any other states have implemented taxes on hybrid and electric cars?
I don't have a current list, but yes, there are other states. And seems to be it is becoming popular in recent years. Yeah, that is such a regressive regulation. I for one don't mind paying my share of "road" tax in other form, but fixed fees (surcharges) on all PHEV/BEV and only on PHEV/BEV is not the way to go IMOH. EDIT: I searched on web. It's been the topic here again and again. The Search tool can be your friend. When the topic comes up, it's most often suggested Vehicles be assigned a fee based on road damage, which invariably means by vehicle weight. Nothing wrong with that. .
And mileage on the car, if I can suggest to the law makers. They already track the odo reading for the annual registration, so make us pay proportionally for the distance driven on the road regardless of type of the car.
Wee little hybrids aren't causing the wear and tear on our highways. If they did, then that is admitting the highways aren't built for the typical and numerous 80,000 pound tractor trailers. I'm just thankful that this state isn't yet charging the fee. It's amazing to think that we've gone from the government pushing citizens to save gas, drive 55 MPH or slower, car-pool, and drive smaller vehicles to penalizing those of us who finally did so.
I don't get this - doesn't make a lot of sense. But then - it's politicians making deci$ion$. I could buy a TOYOTA LANDCRUISER - and use up to 20 litres/100km. Or I could buy a GOLF Diesel and realistically use 5½ litres/100km. Or a Gen 1 PRIUS (if there are still any around) - and they use more-or-less the same. Going on OFFICIAL figures - a VW POLO is 4.8 litres/100km, and a pure ICE YARIS is 4.9. And a Gen 2 PRIUS is 4.4. But then, a LEXUS LS Hybrid is rated at 8.6l/100.
I think that state legislators simply don't "get" that hybrids are purely gasoline powered vehicles with a technology "tweak" that enhances their efficiency. I understand that there are some small non-hybrids that get mileage that is comparable to what a Prius gets, but THOSE cars are not subject to the "hybrid" surcharge. So hybrids owners are penalized solely for buying gasoline-powered cars that are very efficient. The issue of plug-in vehicles (which are in part or in full powered by an external electricity source) is another matter , and I am not talking about those here.
I suspect the dollar amount shown on the map is the maximum charged. In MS hybrids pay $75, while full electrics pay $150.
Oh, they 'get' everything, including kick-backs from big oil in the form of being on 'boards' and receiving paychecks for said 'board' positions after they leave office. I know a guy who worked for one of the higher-ups (he, himself, not an elected official for the USA, but worked for it directly) who I respect a lot. I got a great look into how corporations support 'productive' key players after they leave or are voted out of the position. It's not just big oil, or big corn - ever see that 'UL' symbol on the underside of electronic devices? That's a group with 'positions' as well.
in hawaii we have an added $50 fee for having ev plates, just sucks that they took away some ev perks (free metered street and municipal parking)
