    Hi folks,

I went to take my car (prius 2 2017 model) for a maintenance check. The dealer was providing additional options but he is charging extra bucks. I am not sure if they are necessary and how often it's required to do those.

    Stuff that I am doing:
    1) replace engine oil and oil filter
    2) check and adjust tire pressure, inspect for wear
    3) rotate tires and perform a brake inspection
    4) Multi-point inspections.

Stuff that I am not sure of:
    5) Perform HV battery cooling system filter
    6) Install premium fuel system cleaner (44K Platinum)
    7) Install Windshield washer solvent
    8) Perform engine crankcase cleaning service, add premium oil conditioner
    9) perform brake fluid exchange service ( He mentioned it's better to do this every 30k miles/2 years).
    10) Install fuel system conditioners
    11) mass airflow sensor cleaning service

Your suggestions would be really useful to me, as this is my first car. It's been like 2 years after purchase and I have driven like 9k miles in those two years (total mileage is about 55k). I did have a maintenance check about a year ago and at that time, I only did the first 4 items.

Thanks for the response. It's like 500$ for 5 to 9 listed above

I don't want to influence you with my take on what I read in your OP, but if you have the $ and you want the service, well.
Or you could get a second opinion from another shop, either toyota or independent.
What are your thoughts on #8 on the list?

Yep. it sounds very muich to me like what a service writer at the dealership would try to sell.

How often do you think it's required/recomended to do 5-8?

I think 7 should be done at every sevice call. I think 8 is a complete no no - oil additives change the viscosity of the 0 20 oil and not in a good way.
And how often someone gets specfic services always depends on the way the car is driven and it's conditon at time of service. Everyone has there own personal preferences to service intervals, including the dealers service writers.

Yes, I read the same thing online, these are supposedly scams to trap us into it. What's your opinion on 5-6, 9 & 11?

Also, there is an extra tire hazard coverage 180-day. I don't drive much, do you think I need it?

Of all the things, I feel like only brake fluid exchange , fuel system cleaner may be makes sense based on what I read online. I am not sure of the rest like hv battery cooling system filter

Sorry, I don't know what to tell you about specific services. There may be good reason to flush and bleed the brakes on your car. Have you looked in the brake fluid resevre? Does it look low of dirty? Do you think the brake service is a wise preventive service? If, yes than have it done.

Thanks for the reply. Not really, just that it's been driven for 30k miles almost and been like 2 years without the brake fluid exchange service. Are fuel system cleaners effective?

If I were you, I would not do anything beyond what the regular maintenance Toyota calls for at that interval, unless you have a problem. That means do 1-4 and call it done. That being said, 7 should be done free of charge for a multipoint check for topping off the fluid. And 9 is something Toyota forgot to write down on the manual, but maybe should be done every 3 years or so, or at the least check the brake fluid. 5 can be checked visually and if not dirty, don't need it. If they are dirty either clean or replace yourself. I am surprised that they did not list the air filter and cabin filter change in the list. 6,8,10,11 are not needed, IMHO.

BTW, is your car Prius Prime or 2017 Prius Two? Either way, the needed service should be very similar.

Also, I have been wondering about one thing. I have been getting a mileage of 45 MPG with prius two 2017. I live in a city. Is that usual? Or should I check that out?

I don't have much experience with Gen4, but from what I have read, 45mpg is on the low end of the spectrum. If your drive is mainly very short stop-and-go city drive, then it may be a reasonable number. If not, usual suspects are tires (either very new or very old or low pressure) and bad 12v battery.

Regarding the brake fluid exchanged, is it like tricky to change it regularly like every two years? I read like no moisture should enter when they do the exchange. Maybe I should trust the Toyota service center in this case to do the job.

I have never done brake fluid DIY. For Prius, there are two ways of doing it with TechStream or without. I am sure others will chime in on this, but any shops should be able to do it. You can ask how much for the full brake inspection and fluid replacement, but it should not cost much more than $100. Again, if the fluid is checked and no degradation (moisture in the fluid), it may not need to be replaced, but if you have never done thorough brake checks and cleaning in 3yrs 55kmils, it may be a good idea to get the brake serviced now.

I know people get nervous about brakes but the fluid doesn't need to be changed unless moisture gets into it. You can buy a brake fluid moisture tester from Amazon for less than $10. My Prius is 11 years old and has never had the brake fluid changed. My tester shows no moisture.

For a counterpoint: Toyota Canada recommends to change brake fluid every 3 years or 48k km (30k miles).
