The trouble is I now see claims that not having in-person teaching will cause these children permanent harm -- but I don't know the source or logic of these claims.

For some kids, the school lunch is the only regular source of proper nutrition they get. Lack of that is the only source of harm with keeping schools closed that I heard of.

suicide rates up as well. Many people need more socializing, just to stay up, and if forced to be isolated, the depressed get more depressed.
    .

    What about like this;
    • 10-14 days - incubation
    • 30 days - 50% asymptomatic * * * * * *
    • 30 days - 80% ÷ 2 recovery at home
    • 44 days - 15% ÷ 2 hospital recovery
    • 60 days - funerals
50% was used for example - as the asymptomatic variable ... because some sources say as high as 75%.

Yes, that's an important point, if not the only one. The recently retired superintendent of an adjoining school district (with many low-income families) said that he dreaded having to call a snow day on a Friday or a Monday, because that meant that some students could be going three days without a decent meal instead of only two.

I see reports that a vaccine developed at the University of Queensland (Australia) has passed its initial testing on animals.

Likely the case for you, but some that had it don't produce antibodies.

Antibodies are a second line of defense in the immune system. If the first line of defense kills off the infected cells before they release more virus, antibodies may not be produced.

US from highest levels was urged to open up May to June and most states did. It was followed by increased infection rates so I took a look.

31 states have >40 thousand cases now and showed re opening bumps. I used their earlier rates to estimate how big the bumps have been so far.

US has now had about 6 million cases, of which about 2 million can be attributed to hasty re opening. Of about 200 thousand deaths so far in US, about 80 thousand deaths can be attributed to this.

Some will want to think about this, and consider balancing economic and human consequences of 'early and hot' re opening.

Not so much hasty reopening as much as selfish people ignoring recommendations and rules. The university I work at has some pretty good rules but apparently they are not tightly enforced. I still work from home but went in to the office after hours to pick up some things. Except for a few of the students waiting for a bus none of the students outside were wearing masks in spite of the rules. I was just driving past so was not personally concerned.

We see the same selfishness when out shopping in spite of state mandates.

Grim humor, the "Darwin Award" is often applied where it does not truly fit when the subject is no longer fertile. But what we've seen at the University of Alabama town, Tuscaloosa, it is classic "Darwin Award" behavior. Packed bars and parties by those likely to start families soon, the young, foolish, and fertile.

nice find bob, thank you. if you run into one that tests protection for the wearer, i would be very interested.

mrs b is a nurse, and claims that she was taught that the mask protects the wearer from patients with contagious diseases. perhaps true to some extent with a properly fitted mask and a lesser extent with others due to aerosols and eye exposure, plus the randomness of the environment you happen to be in.

A college testing wastewater from dorms pinpointed a high coronovirus concentration in a particular dorms wastewater-they then did testing in the identified dorm isolating two infected students eliminating a potential high outbreak of Covid-19 in the the dorm.

Interesting innovative thinking to make their students safer.

COVID-19 outbreak prevented at UA dorm after wastewater testing

"The wastewater testing provides a way to monitor for potential cases, particularly asymptomatic ones, beyond individual tests for the virus, UA leaders said.

Pepper and his team will regularly collect wastewater samples from buildings on campus, including all dorms, throughout the school year, he told The Republic in July.

The data will help determine a possible outbreak in a specific building or dorm, help the school test students and mitigate the spread of the virus, he said."
