lol. It was strange looking at this 6 yo thread.

Tesla is the american auto manufacturer with the highest market cap. It is now producing in china though, and is going to open a German factory next year.

Chrysler is now part of fiat chrysler, its only semi american and has had 2 bankruptcies.

Good ol' ford failed at out teslaing tesla, and changed ceos twice. It's stock is now less than half of what it was when that was announced, tesla is up 500%, toyota up 1%, gm down 20%.

So gm after 1 bankruptcy is in the best shape of the old american vehicle manufacturers.

VW is now the second largest plug-in producer, no one would have thought that back in 2014.

Of the "big three", I feel Ford has been the most sincerest when it comes to hybrids and EVs. When it comes to executing, they don't have the cash reserves of Toyota, nor can they raise cash like Tesla. It is more the need of staying in business than lack of interest that hinders their efforts.

depending on how long and deep the recession goes, i don't hold out a lot of hope for any of the 'big 3'
if they haven't padded the coffers in the last ten or so years with truck and suv sales, it's never going to happen.

drug addicts - when they need to get a fix - don't want you to give them multivitamins. Give them what they want, or they will go elsewhere. So it is with land barges. But the up-and-coming generation do without cars all together. Who do manufacturse sell to at that Crossroad.

Being CEO of an ICE manufacturer has to be one of the hardest jobs right now. If battery increases in density and decrease in price per watt-hr continues at the rate that it has been following for the last 10 years, then within 5 years the cheapest car you can buy will be an electric car that can be fast charged and can drive for 250 miles. That would spell the end of many, if not most, ICE car sales.

So a forward looking CEO will prepare for this. But, in the mean time, what do you do about the ICE cars that are making the company money? Most companies and their shareholders are not so forward thinking, so it is a difficult position to be in. The VW CEO is in a similar bind and was rumored to be very close to being sacked:
