My Gen 4 Prius does not have a CD or cassette player. I have hundreds of cassette tapes I just don't have the energy for to turn them into MP3s. Is there a way to play cassettes out of a 2020 Prius stereo system? Is there such a thing as a cassette adapter one can plug into the USB outlets in the Prius?

Any cassette player headphone jack to the aux input would solve this issue.

Get a Walkman type (don't think the original brand is available any more) portable Cassette Player - you might need to get a used one?? A lead to the AUX will work.

If buying one, check that it's got a Headphone outlet - not USB as one I saw did (though that might work too - I'm not sure - I have used the Headphone to AUX).

I converted all my LPs and Cassettes - but yes, it was a big job.

If you don't mind the price, a Walkman model WM D6 C is a professional type machine that gives top performance, it's made to last. Most other Walkmans were throw away tat. Plug in to Aux in Jack. I also miss cassette players in modern cars!

I agree with all of the above. In terms of the CD player, are you sure it doesn't have one? There's been a few threads on here where people just simply haven't realised it's that almost invisible slot above the screen.

This is the smaller screen on mine (ignore the black arrow) - the green!!

    upload_2020-7-24_18-41-43.png

I'm not sure what they did with the big screen - maybe they deleted the CD Player?

PS - the DUST is optional. I hate black.

Hmm, my CD player location is different. Mine is just above the glass of the screen and almost invisible. Looks just like the gap between the screen and the rest of the plastic surround.

From the Driver's seat, it's almost invisible - I was surprised it showed up so well in the photo (ages ago, to point out to someone the VOLUME displayed).

Wow! They still sell the Sony Pro Walkman?!! I bought one in the late-80s that I still have (though I have not used in maybe 25 years)!

If you think converting music cassettes to MP3s is a long job you should try converting 3 and 4 hour VHS video tapes to MP4 ;)

Our 2018 level II has a CD player. If your 2020 LE doesn't, it's highly likely that an older gen4 unit will simply swap in and they can be found fairly cheaply.

Ohh - I've just been asked by my daughter if I could do that for her wedding video - I think only 45 mins (VHS-C). How did you do it?

I also had hundreds of music tapes. After getting rid of 2005 Sienna, we have not had any car that can play cassette tapes. I actually bought a cassette tape deck that can turn the audio tapes into mp3, but have not actually used it. As it turned out, almost all of music I have on the tapes are now available on music streaming site like Spotify. $9.99/mo for ads free music was much easier and far safer way to listen to music in the car. I just listened 6 hours of uninterrupted music streaming on my recent trip. If I had to do that with cassette tapes, I don't know how many times I had to take my eyes off the road to fiddle with tapes and players. That's my 2 cents.

But I'm going to guess that the OP with the handle "sixstringer" may be listening to unpublished or no longer available audio. For some people of a certain age (cough), the audio may be personal recordings of voices from long ago. Many churches during the 60-90's recorded to cassette any and all events (weddings, funerals).

Yeah, if they are archival non-music tapes, then maybe. But if they are really unpublished or no longer available audio that's still of interest to OP to keep listening to them, then it would be more of reason to turn them into digital files and make multiple back-ups before the magnetic tapes turns into shreds of plastic films.

Most definitely but as with the case of some who've come to me, their libraries can be extensive to the point of overwhelming. Since the processing is real-time, hundreds to thousands of hours of tapes drives the labor costs through the roof.

There was a similar thread here from an owner with a new Prime advanced that didn't have a CD player and they had a collection that spanned thousands upon thousands of discs (a garage full).

CDs are most likely to be music unless they are CD-R burned digital audio files, in which case, they already exist as mp3 files. For those, I see very little reason to spend time or money to rip them into mp3 unless they are extremely rare CD that can not be found on major streaming sites. In between Spotify and YouTube, I am finding almost all off music in my tape and CD collections. I had some recorded tapes from TV shows and radio programs, but I found them as well on YouTube.

I well remember touring in my VOLVO 940 (and 244 before that). I borrowed about 3 dozen cassettes from Mum with BBC Comedy and other PODCASTS. I found a cardboard box just the right size, sat it on the passenger seat and with the cassettes sat face down (all out of boxes). I could eject, place the "used" cassette in the back vacant spot, grab the front one and insert it without taking eyes off the road.

And it had knobs and buttons - not like the dumb PRIUS entertainment centre with a hunk of glass.
