Hi guys it's me again, it's been 4 years since I've had an issue with my wife's Prius so that's a plus.. Details are as followed.

    • 7/23/2020 wife called with red triangle (P0A80).
    • The battery wouldn't get above 2-3 bars with no extra power running.
    • Tested 12v battery in little hopes that a failure might be there first. It read 11.7v (Brand: never start, dated 7/15 prior to me owning it). I ordered a YELPRIUS Optima and found that someone changed the terminals and my battery wouldn't fit.
    • Ordered new cables from Toyota and installed.
All codes were cleared because of th
battery removal but everything seemed good again. Also the Battery started acting normal again maintaining 60% charge.

Cut to today... 7/27/2020 same code again. I haven't gotten more readings yet because I'm at work but here is a snipit from before the code that I got the other day.

    Ideas or bad battery?

Car details 199k miles. 07 Prius. Could use new shocks all around, breaks and the clear is peeling.

well 200k miles is right about where Toyota figures this car will last to. It was designed to go about 180k miles of troublefree driving. After that, you would need to start replacing a lot of parts to keep it on the road.

You have a failed hybrid battery for sure, it doesn't fix itself by you just resetting the car (replacing or disconnecting the 12v battery). That is about $1600-$2000. Then the shocks, if you can't DIY and depend on the dealer, that would be another $1500. Brakes another $300-$500. Painting the roof of the car, $800.

Yeah I can handle the maintenance of the car so the totals are lower but if that is in fact a bad hybrid battery then I'm starting to think it's time to send her to pasture. My only question is that the hybrid readings seem to be in spec! Maybe I'm reading them wrong tho. If anyone has any thought on what I should look at to be sure about this main battery using any OBD2 apps I'm all ears. I have torque Pro if that helps.

You've got block 12 consistently showing weaker than the others. It'll probably eventually show further excursions and get to the ends faster during both charge and discharge.

The 12v battery situation wasn't doing you any favors, but the HV traction battery is showing signs of trouble. Now with a healthy 12V you can have more faith in those signs and act accordingly.

Thanks, I've reset the code and am watching/logging the car now while my wife drives mine. I have been reading up on 2KT battery and might go that route if the pack continues to cause issues.

If you KNOW that you're going to be keeping the car then you may want to start sourcing the replacement battery/cells NOW.

Everybody is all worried about this COVID thing, and it's lengthening supply chains for a wide number of things, NOT just T.P. or 9x19mm rounds.

Your dealer "may" be able to offer you a new/old battery for a G2 for a substantially higher price than some of the DIY/Aftermarket solutions out there - and they MAY actually have one on hand.

    Your call....
Just remember that your car becomes lawn art without a working traction battery. ;)

If you are serious about diy whack a mole...

You could get a grid charger/discharger installed and if your drive isn’t too long potentially ignore the problem for a few years until it becomes critical
    Then replace the bad block

Easiest is to pay the $2000 for a brand new Toyota pack and not worry for a long while.

Yeah that's what I'm worried about right now. I was waiting to see the code come up one more time first... You know wishful prayers

Late to the party but here.

As for scrapping it versus keeping it, that's up to you. Looks like you really only need a new battery. But the engine may explode as you test drive your new pack, you just never know. I agree with ETC that in your area, it is cheaper to keep it going assuming nothing else major happens right away.

You mentioned in a different post you only do 5k miles a year on this Prius. Is that a 3k mile roadtrip annually and then trips down the block? Or a 10 mile commute twice daily 50 weeks a year? The Prius wants, or NEEDS, to be driven. Sitting for months rotting, is not good. If your driving situation has changed and you're only going 20mi a day, a used Leaf would be a better investment than a new battery in an old Prius.

We are expecting stock in end of this week, ship out next week.

My wife drives a total of 3 miles a day and once every two weeks is 50 miles. Other than that it's random. So not many miles haha. Funny you said leaf... That's my car!!!

Well I'm taking the advice from others and the data I've gathered today from the car and the 2900 entries I logged.. block 12 had a difference of .95!. I've placed an order for the 2K1 battery kit. Let's hope this car last long enough to get it.
