I DESPISE this trend with electronic accessories lately.

The car does NOT have a NAV function built in.
You MUST use an app on your "smart phone".......if it is compatible.
Might as well get a phone holder and just use Waze or Google.

That is the message you will get if the car does not have dedicated navigation and must use your phone's GPS system along with the Scout GPS app in Entune. I wanted to try that on a Corolla that we recently rented, but never had a chance. The video (linked below) makes it seem as though it is fairly capable, but I guess you will never know unless you try it in a real world situation. I am still curious, since I am not sure it is worth paying for the dedicated navigation option (what Toyota calls Dynamic Navigation) in the next car we buy. If you get a chance to use Scout GPS, please report back here how you liked it.

ALL of the available evidence says that statement is WRONG.

Besides that, I don't think the Nav function has used an onboard CD for many years.

There is a CD player on mine in the audio unit, unless you're talking about a Nav CD.

Right, we are talking about the Navigation system. I believe it was a DVD they used for Navigation in the Gen 2 cars, but a memory stick since then. Separately, our Gen 4 still has a CD player, but I believe they may have eliminated that in the newer models. It's basically obsolete.

It is part of Toyota Entune Apps, Scout GPS. Its all built in on the phone and does not use a physical CD for data as the new head units do not have an optical disk drive. I never tried this in my 2020 because I have Apple Car Play and I prefer Google Maps.

Even after installing entune and scout I still couldn't get the GPS to work in the head unit. I also can't get it to mirror my screen for my Android phone. Wth

Right, I know these head units don't yet have Android Auto, but that is supposed to be coming in the future. Were you getting error messages when you tried to install Scout GPS? What did they say? Do you see it as one of the Apps on your head unit? @Tideland Prius might be able to help with this.

Which is EXACTLY why I HATE the new design philosophy.

Toyota will blame the problem on the phone.
The phone maker will blame Toyota.
Then they BOTH will blame the maker of the software in the car.
And you may NEVER get it working.
And you have little to no recourse.

    Newer is not always better.

Maybe part of the problem is the manufacturer's (misguided?) obligation to constantly add more dreck. The car's for getting you places. If you've got to have a soundtrack while accomplishing this, once upon a time turning on the radio would suffice.

I'm waiting for someone to offer a basic/simple dash, easy to reach, ergonomic controls, infotainment-free, thanks. It'll never happen.

It looks like it’s using ScoutGPS. I can’t remember if the regular Prius has built in nav (probably just the Limited) but LE and XLE are ScoutGPS. Why one would use that over Waze, Google Maps or even Apple Maps is beyond me.

Navigation hasn’t used CDs in over 15 years. We quickly transitioned to DVD or hard drives then onto SD cards about 5-8 years later. We’re now in the SD card/flash drive based systems. Or, in the case of the base models, smartphone app-based.

Import a Japanese Prius. A basic LCD single din headunit is available.

Never mind, looks like they shrunk the number of head units down to 3 and they’re all touchscreen.

Same. Use Apple Carplay and load up your favorite map, if on Android, buy a phone mount. Move on.

I rented one too before I bought my 2015 and was glad I did. I'm interested in which model you rented and what you think about it overall.

I'm leaning towards a 2020 or 2021 Prime LE now. I want the fake leather and heated seats, but I don't want a lot of the fancy electronics and I don't want AWD. At first I thought I would have to go with the more expensive XLE to get what I want. However, now I'm thinking the LE is the right choice, and then I can add leather and heated seats - or go with leather seating surfaces (covers). 20 years ago I never would have considered these kinds of aftermarket adds.....but these days the quality and cost of aftermarket stuff is reasonable - often better than factory. I guess I should just rent a 2020 and get out on the road.

I wish manufacturers had a "no entertainment system" option when ordering a car, then I'll figure out where best to spend my money later.
