dr. fauci says we could be facing 100,000 cases a day, and serious amounts of death, if drastic changes aren't made quickly.

i'll make the rest of my statement in the sandbox

It might be interesting to have two areas of the country - one for people who care about others and follow rules- and another where you think only of yourself and do whatever you want - then track the results - something tells me it would look exactly like the European Union vs United States results

@bisco, it is common for states (or countries) to take a day off reporting. Work with weeks.

    Or fortnights.

MA by the way is one of very few states where new cases are still in decline.

In Europe we had very thorough lockdown, we effectively eradicated the virus, but not quite.

There were pockets here and there and new cases are rising, borders are open we are effectively in the beginning just like we were in winter. It's just that people will not tolerate another lockdown, there are certain limits like wearing masks and every case is investigated and all contacts are quarantened, but it's just a question of time when there will be just too many case to investigate individually.

We just bought our self some time, but it's far from over.

that was a statement from the mdph, but they also mentioned a change in counting methodology, reducing overall deaths to date.

In the US our states are incentivized to list cause of death as Covid 19

PolitiFact: On hospitals and the possible financial incentive of COVID-19 patients

COVID-19 death certificate change stirs controversy | MPR News

Are Hospitals Over-Reporting COVID-19 Cases Because of Financial Incentives? – InsideSources

I tend to be skeptical of the death count - in some cases Covid 19 is a contributing factor hastening death but certainly not the cause of death.

Some state like New York where the state shipped Covid-19 patients to nursing homes certainly assured more deaths for those individuals and the poor nursing home residents who were sure to be infected.

Coronavirus NY: New York Gov. Cuomo criticized over highest nursing home death toll - ABC7 New York

"The way this has been handled by the state is totally irresponsible, negligent and stupid," said Elaine Mazzotta, a nurse whose mother died last month of suspected COVID-19 at a Long Island nursing home. "They knew better. They shouldn't have sent these people into nursing homes."

The article was posted on WorldNetDaily, a conservative news website. It was produced by The Spectator, which describes itself as a conservative publication. The Spectator reported on comments made by Dr. Scott Jensen, a Minnesota physician and Republican state senator, in an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham.
At this point, the past practices of these sources makes their conclusions suspect. Do you have empirical sources like a JAMA, LANCET, or equivalent professional journal that use medical lab or pathologist data?

There is a similar thread in "Fred's House of Politics" where personal opinions from political source claims belong. Based on your first source, let's discuss them over at FHOP.

Your entitled to your opinion - guess what others are also entitled to theirs.

This whole thread is fascinating and interesting and encourages others to participate - the recent post are discussing death totals.

I enjoyed posting my take on it and will continue to participate as I hope other do.

Snickered at the mention of the "LANCET" a publication that, in the 1820s, was named for an interesting device, used in an interesting way.....

    Science gets there.....eventually.
Not without a little.......er.....'bloodletting' along the way.

    @John321 .... good luck, pal.

People who say COVID deaths are over-counted because people die from other causes and counted as COVID should stop and ask themselves how many people die from HIV? Almost none. Most HIV patients die from infections, flu, cold, etc. But they would not have died from these things if they did not have AIDS! It's the same with COVID. People dying from pneumonia while suffering from COVID MUST be counted as COVID deaths. Ditto for strokes and heart attacks caused by the virus. It is really, REALLY stupid to say that those deaths are not COVID deaths. I think if anything, COVID deaths are under-counted since many folks do not go to get tested and just up and die from a stroke that was caused by the corona virus.

All the people that do not believe in this virus should form their own community and geographically separate and have their rallies and parties without masks and social distancing. Then we'd be rid of them in about a month or so.

You probably would not be rid of ALL of them.
My beloved home state of Indiana reported roughly 45,500 "confirmed" Covid cases recently with 2448 "confirmed" deaths.
This suggests that this virus is survivable......by some at least, even if some of the numbers are a little off.

Vfeerdman you make some great points- if I gave the impression Covid 19 doesn't kill people I apologize that was not my intent. My mother-in -law is in a nursing home and it is always on the back of our minds that she is at great risk. Currently we can't even see her due to our states restrictions on nursing home visitors.

My impression is that those of us with already existing medical conditions are at a much greater risk of complications and possible death from Covid ( I include myself in that category).

There is a lot we don't yet know about this virus since it's so new to us. This is the scariest part for me. Ignorance is scary and we are still fairly ignorant about this thing. Time and effort will change that, of course, but right now there is a lot of unknown about this thing. Best of luck with your loved ones. I hope we all get through this stronger and more resilient, but in the meantime lots of crazy nut jobs are out of the woodwork (don't even get me started on 5G thing!!!) trying to pretend they know something others (with more education and knowledge and brains and resources) are too stupid to understand. It makes me sad and angry and scared. Just wear your masks and keep your distance, FFS! It's not so difficult. I fail to see how this impinges on anyone's rights.

Yes, you are right. As we learn more the treatments are getting more effective too. Also, from what I understand there is more blood plasma available from survivors and that is proving effective in treatment. So yes, we would not get rid of the nut jobs, but at least we'd now where they all are :) As it is, the most surprising people in my circles are turning out to be brewing conspiracy theories that don't stand up to even the lightest of scrutiny.

"Getting rid of nut jobs" has been tried, and found wanting.

I suppose it is all about methodology.

How were flu deaths counted before covid?
