hi guys, about a year ago, i bought a gen2 2006 Prius, really happy with the purchase,.
However, looking deeper into what i bought i noticed that i have keyless access(black button on doors which locks/unlock vehicle and i can also enter the vehicle by just pulling the handlebar)
the problem is, the car had accident, and the original key was lost, so the guy who sold it decided to go easier route and made a "cheap" fob replacement, so with that fob i cant start my vehicle, i can certainly use every "smart" feature of the keyless entry but can't start the car.
digging deeper into this i found that its not working because that is not the original fob.

question is - is there a way to reprogram my Prius and assign a new "original" fob? if so, what do i need to buy to do it myself?
i am a techy guy and can handle problem like this.
If someone could guide me, previously owned multiple BMW's and know how to program cars, just need someone's advice.

Wanted to add that if i put the fob in the slot it starts the car, but if i try to use "smart" feature, it doesnt start. I already tried to replace the battery on the fob, regardless of the location of the fob, the car can't start "smart"

    thank you in advance!

stupid question, but did you press the button under the steering wheel that disables the smart start feature? other than that, prepare to get hosed at the dealer...

yes, i checked that, if i turn it off it also affects my keyless entry so i do notice that for sure

i really cant believe that there is no other way, stupid enough to say "this is stupid", but i really think there should be some kind of workaround rather than a dealer.. :(

SKS is both keyless entry (lock/unlock) and keyless start as in the key fob does not need to be inserted into the slot. With keyless entry, you lock the car by pressing the black button and you unlock the car by touching the door handle.

So, to recap, you are saying the original key fob was lost and you only have one fob and that is a cheap replacement. This fob allows you to access the car via keyless entry but does not allow keyless start.

    Questions:
    • Is the cheap replacement fob an OEM or a third party?
    • Is all of the SKS still OEM, or has there been third-party additions?
If I have understood this all correctly, (and it is still all OEM) there may be something else at work here. It sounds like the car does not detect the fob inside the car. Maybe you should look into this. The receiver is located at the back of the center console and behind the rear cupholders
This would only be the case if none of the SKS worked.
Although I don't think your problem is the key fob, the answer to your question is you need Techstream, a seed code, and a brand new "virgin" silver logo key fob. You can buy them online for about $132 if you find the right OEM seller.

Update us with how you get on.
