Featured Prius Gen 5 for 2021?

    I am trying to make a purchase decision.

    Will there be a Prius redesign for the 2021 model year? In other words, is the redesign expected to be unveiled later this year?

    The last redesign was introduced for the 2016 model year. I believe details were official announced in 2015. It's been five years. I hope the anniversary edition marketing gimmick is not the 2021 model.

    Gen2 and Gen3 both went 6 years. If that pattern is continued, then Gen5 would be for model year 2022.

    While we have already seen new model introduction announcements for 2021 RAV4 Prime, Sienna, and Venza, I'm not remembering anything for Prius.

    the only thing we know from history is that they should be becoming available late summer of 2021

    it has been a 6 year cycle, not 5. imo, if toyota were to change the cycle duration, the would extend it due to current circumstances, and also because they have already stated that gen 5 needs to be a game changer.

    I'm excited to see to the new Prius whenever it comes out. However, I'll never buy the first year or two of a new car/generation/etc

    We’ve had an 02 Camry, 05 Prius, ‘10 Prius, ‘16 Prius and ‘18 Prime. All first or second year cars. Very few problems or issues. Actually the 2005 was the most problem-free - zero. All others had one.

    I bought a Prius v and then a Rav4 both hybrids, both first year, even first quarter of manufacture. v had one problem in 42k miles. Rav4 had 1 problem in 8600 miles. I'd say Toyota has the hybrid thing pretty much worked out. Is it even possible to produce a perfect car with the complexity of today's vehicles?

    Toyota does seem to test their cars in smaller markets and then introduce them to the US. See the Rav4 hybrid plug-in as an example.

    Now 3 Prius cars in the family.

    Seriously - I suspect not. Going on Gen 3, it was quite tired, even when I drove it in 2010, and the update - it drove poorly, compared with my then 5 year old FORD FOCUS. I couldn't have lived with one (and bought another FORD).

    TOYOTA had to do something, and they introduced the TNGA platform with Gen 4, which has since been rolled out to many other TOYOTA models. That platform, and Gen 4 is still up to date, still drives well, is still a good car. The hatchback market is diminishing, and I'd be surprised if TOYOTA made it a high priority.

    TOYOTA is, instead, working on other Hybrids - the Corolla Crossover has been hinted at, the YARIS and YARIS Crossover - plus RAV and other more serious SUVs seem to be getting more attention.

    Eventually, TOYOTA will have to renew PRIUS - but they might only do something more like the Gen2 -> Gen 3 partial upgrade.

    Only after they get to the point of handsfree entry (which they said they’ll do). The current demonstration requires the phone to be taken out of the pocket and placed near the handle, then placed on the wireless charger in the car to start the car.

    Right now, I don’t have to do anything other than open the door and start the car. No need to take out anything from my pocket. The car starts, my phone connects and my music starts playing. That’s the beauty of having everything integrated.

    Yes. But the initial rollout of CarKey is like using the Model 3's key card instead of the phone.

    Any idea why that is?
    At least one other non-Tesla car had a phone as key option before the Model 3. This has been done before by different car companies.

    My criteria is can I walk up to the car with both hands full and place the stuff in my hands inside the car without ever using my hands. No reaching in the pocket, and press a fob. No reaching in the pocket, pull out a phone, deactivate a lock screen and ask for open sesame through an app. No reaching in a wallet and pulling out a card. And without having a phone from manufacturer Z with operating system revision Q.

    I don't want to show off how cool my car is or how well my $1k phone connects. Just get me in the car trivially when it is raining, snowing, sleeting or I'm encumbered doing something else.

    IOW, can I put a case of beer in the trunk easily.

    Sometimes, things can be too cool and too complicated.
