I've a 2014 Prius V Five that at the beginning of this year blew the engine I believe as the result of EGR issues. I bought it used with low mileage but as I drive excessively it now has over 100k miles on it. I'm still under loan (and underwater) with this car but would like to replace the engine, get it back on the road and continue paying the loan on it which due to the pandemic has allowed me to go several months without paying.

Where and how much can I get a replacement engine? How much to have it installed? Can I get one with the EGR system already cleaned out? I'm more comfortable working with the electrical side of things and less so the mechanical though I'll do the basic stuff like change the oil and brake pads. How much attention to detail will taking out the powertrain, removing and replacing the ICE and putting the assembly back in?

I've been through three 2nd gen Prii, predictably making it to approximately 300k miles before the engine fails. Feel the 3rd gen powertrain has been a disappointment with lower fuel economy as well as the EGR issue and what I've read about the EGR on these vehicles. It's a thought just to buy another used 2nd gen as it's a known evil but that leaves me potentially writing off the loan on the V when I don't want to take the hit on my credit.

Attached is a picture of the damage to the engine as well....

I would probably get a JDM imported engine installed by someone who has done it before. Or check with LKQ Salvage. Really needs to be a Prius v engine to make it easy although the mechanic will probley have to configure the ecus to the car. Then, never allow yourself a chance to go underwater on a loan so you can junk it if it deserves the end. Japanese Engines in Houston, Texas

the mpg's are actually better on the gen3, but the v is a larger vehicle.

the egr is the achilles heal of gen3, no question. other than that, it's probably as good as gen 2.

search here for installing a gen 4 engine in a v. not sure but i thought i saw a thread.

Lots of highspeed highway driving? And/or higher miles, with neglected EGR? And maybe 10K vs 5K oil changes?

The question was why only some? They all got rings. 2010 thru somewhere in 2014, they all got the same rings. Trying to come up with reasons, rings aside.

Methinks cus 2015 (all of them) have the revised pistons/rings. Would guess the rings push out more (more "springy"), better for oil consumption issues, but more friction?
