I purchased a new 12 volt battery to put in my jump starter but I could not install it properly so I decided to not install it and just use the battery as a jump starter by hooking it to my car battery when needed. Three questions Will that work? At what amperage do I charge the stand alone Sealed Lead Acid battery? and what kind of charger would I use? Thanks
i can't recommend one, but any battery on amazon will work. ctek, schumacher, etc. that way, you don't have to worry about charging amps.
I don't understand what you are saying I already have the battery I was talking about how to charge this 12 volt battery Thanks
Two amps is about right for a lawn tractor or motorcycle battery, four or six for a medium sized car battery. Look for charger that can automatically stop when the charge is complete. A 1/2 amp, 500 m.a. maintainer will be veeery slow.
You get to pick the maximum capacity of the charger used.......but you don't get to pick the actual charging amperage. The battery and charger will decide that without any input from you. A "normal" automatic battery tender of a capacity no more than 4 amps should be fine.
Yes, theoretically. I would persevere though, trying to replace the jumpstarter battery, or just replacing the jumpstarter, if it comes to that. Excerpt from Owner's Manual (page 439): I would suggest getting a "smart" charger, rated around that (4.2) amperage. FWIW, I'm using a CTEK 4.3 (4.3 amp rating), happy with it. Use it a LOT.
Thought the 12v fires up the hv bat to start ICE and doesn’t need put much power at all, so no need to charge after a few jumps I would just install the new battery and call it good, no need to buy other things, and worry about blowing up a battery like the manual says.
Yeah one thing: jumpstarting your own vehicle, should not be a regular thing. If you're doing that, you're basically procrastinating, on some facet of battery maintenance.
I d'know about that... The procrastinator's tool kit (feel free to join in): Duct Tape (Red Green's go-to) Head Gasket Stop Leak Jumper Cables Zip Ties
let me recap: 1) purchased a new 12v battery for a jump pack 2) could not install it properly 3) is going to use the new 12v to jump the car directly 4) how to keep the new 12v charged? 5) any errors there?
6) Buy another new battery so no need to recharge either battery and permanent installation not required?
Correct Okay I have the idea Get a charger that charges slow It is so nice to have you guys helping Rather that buy a new jump starter I plan to use the 12 volt battery itself for infrequent jumps That makes sense because car to car jump is 12 volt to 12 volt anyway
yes, that is what i meant in post #2. it does use much juice to fire up the electronics and relays, so a maintainer will be enough to keep it topped up overnight.
Honestly I don’t understand why one would want to keep a big clunky battery (or even a jump starter) around for the occasional jump start when the small li-Po or capacitor starters are less than the cost of the battery, is a small form factor and can fit in many different places, and can be used on any 12v vehicle without draping cables everywhere. What am I missing about the jump starters that makes them so loved today (I get 10-15 years ago they were the go to)? For the other aspect, I’ve been using Battery Tender trickle charger for the motorbike and boat when in storage for the last 6 years without much complaint iPhone ?
the jump pcks are nice because they are usually lithium, and you can simply plug them in to recharge. but i wouldn't own one unless my driving scenario called for it. i have only been stranded once in 15 years
