Hey all! I have been in the market for a Prius and found a 2008 for $2600 with 411,000 miles. It seems ridiculously high but the battery was replaced. Here is the posting: “Selling my 2008 Toyota Prius Touring. It has pretty much every option including dark leather interior, JBL sound, Navigation, factory HID headlamps, ETC. The car has high mileage but has been incredibly reliable, carrying me all over the country and handling daily driving duties without breaking ever. It had a low mileage hybrid battery pack installed a couple years ago so the battery only has around 120k miles. All 2nd gen Prius common problems have been taken care of: -Inverter Coolant Pump -Battery Cooling fan replaced -PCV Cleaned -EGR cleaned -Multifunction Cluster replaced when car was under warranty -PCV cleaned so doesn't burn oil - surprising considering miles The car was recently equipped with high quality K-Sport coil-over suspension with soft springs. It rides fairly nicely. The car has been put to around stock ride height and has a fresh alignment. Pros: -Low Mileage Hybrid Battery -Loaded with options -Everything works -Newer suspension -Absolutely ZERO leaks -Still excellent fuel economy Negatives: -Sway Bar End Links Click over uneven surfaces -High Miles -Driver window lower seal split -Front bumper cover has split from being backed into in a parking lot -Fenders rolled from when car was lowered What should I be looking for when shopping around? And is this even worth looking at? I imagine I could haggle down to $2000-2200
Welcome to PriusChat!! Are you a DIY type of person, or do you have any interest in servicing and repairing a vehicle? You can inspect and decipher the date code on the replacement battery, 120k on a used battery could be on the low side if properly maintained, but given the local climate it could be mostly trashed already. If the modules serials don't match, you might want to pass. Not sure if those coil overs are a plus or not, and would think the rest of the suspension at 400k will need attention, including said end links. One could argue that the only option worthy is the leather, the HIDs can be expensive for some (never had that issue personally), the JBL is harder to upgrade, the navigation is dated at best, and the "touring package" can be outdone with a couple of junkyard parts and labor. All of the replacement items listed are easy, not all that expensive, and will likely have to be serviced again, either sooner or later. I would be cautious of the EGR claim, as the gen2 didn't have such a beast, maybe the owner was taken by an unscrupulous mechanic. At a minimum, run the VIN for any potential purchase for free at https://toyota.com/owners - and if you plan on buying you might also pull a carfax report. If you've never test drove a prius, take a few out for a quick spin and listen for and feel the differences of whats being offered for sale. At some point you will find the "one", and if not, deals come and go, so be prepared to hunt, research, and act quickly if prudent. The price point you're looking to spend at may come with a bunch of future high $$$$ repairs, could you afford such in the near term? Quite a few miles at 400k, you should be able to find one with half the mileage at a similar or slightly increased price point. The one upside is that the seller didn't roll back the odometer, and try to sell it with less mileage to someone who is willing to believe such a claim. Id offer less than 1k, with that many miles its boneyard material. Trust me, I know. Ive got an estimated 500k on my 2005, always fixing schit.
