Oil Filter Remover

    Hi! I'm 1.2K mi away from changing my oil and oil filter. I want to know which tool I need to open it though. I have one on the garage, but it didn't bite the cap when I tried to open it several months ago. I went to Autozone and saw some of these, but I'm not certain which one to get.     I’m not recommending this particular one, but this is the style you would need.


    UTSAUTO Heavy Duty Oil Filter Wrench for Prius Lexus Toyota Scion Fits Prius V/Corolla/Matrix, CT200h, Scion iM/iQ/xD with 1.8 Liter 6 Slots



    Just search “Prius oil wrench”.

    Depends on how tight the last oil change place tightened it, you may need a breaker bar if it’s on tight. I also prefer using a socket on the end instead of just using the 3/8” drive end, but that’s personal preference.

    Autozone has the correct wrench. You have to ask for it. But you can find them on ebay or amazon like
    Spiralhelix showed.

    You want something with 14 faces and a hair over 64 mm inside face-to-face, say 64.5. And preferably heavy gauge, not the $5 PT Tools ones you've pictured.

    It's a VERY common size: Toyota Honda and now Mazda* use it. I use a Honda tool I've had for decades, got it when that size was only used by Honda motorcycles, and their automotive oil filters were significantly larger. Then they switch them all to the motorcycle size.

    I believe the current Honda part number is:

    07AAA-PLCA100

    Any local to you Honda dealership should have it or be able to order it in, for around $20. They are heavy gauge stamped steel, wall thickness measures around 2.4 mm.

    * Our son's Mazda CX5 came from the factory with 14 flute, 67 mm. I got one of those cheapo PT Tool sockets to accomodate it, but when I bought the replacement, it was 64 mm.

    I have the one that autozone sells. It's a tight fit. No problems with it at all.
    just take the clip off and you won't have any problems while laying on your back to remove the housing.
    If you have a lift, you can stand there and press it on while turning...

    I recently switched my oil filter to spin-on style, and did a little video demonstrating that clip. No offense, but it does nothing, offers near-zero resistance to the rotation of the cap:



    The spin-on filters are the same size, 64 mm, 14 flute. This spring oil change, I took the old style (permanent plastic housing) off with my usual socket, did the oil filter bracket conversion, put the spin-on filter on, with the same socket.

    Unless I'm missing something? Spin-on filter part number I'm using: 90915-YZZF2.

    Just because your's is worn, or it has been bent out, doesn't mean it doesn't do anything.
    Which could have happened by not using the correct tool for the job.
    The purpose is to keep the housing from backing out. "IF" for some reason, it wasn't tightened
    correctly it will keep the housing from turning from the vibration of the motor.
    It was not designed to keep it from turning at all.

    Time to stop beating that poor dead horse....

    Thanks for doing that video. I was considering making one myself at the next oil change.

    It's clear enough from the video that that is the factory as-built shape of the clip, and that it is shaped that way to offer no more than token resistance to the rib of the housing that passes beneath it, and that the factory instructions to leave the clip in place are reasonable and well founded.

    If you still have the stuff, would you consider also posting a video of the 'proper' socket (if that's the one you have, with the projecting ears), and how that interacts with the clip?

    I've been curious a long time to see the rumored magical clip-releasing effect that has been sometimes claimed for the 'proper' socket.

    The socket I use has short sidewalls, approx 1/2" deep, doesn't touch the clip. Nothing's ever touched the clip. Yeah, I've forgotten it's even there, lol.

    Ok then, that video will have to get made by somebody with the proper socket. That could be me, if I remember at the next oil change (and I don't end up doing it in the dark as I rather often do).

    For the OP, here's the Repair Manual instruction, has the torque values, oil change amounts, that sort of thing. Also mentions the Toyota oil filter socket "SST no": 09228-06501.

    Yeah I’m still 2k miles from my oil change or I’d make a vid too.

    Not that it adds any value to the discussion, I didn’t even realize that clip existed until joining this forum and had been changing the oil myself for about a year at that point. Maybe the previous places had already bent it out though?

    Doesn't have to be bent out. :) It looks exactly as it looks in Mendel's video, and behaves just as you see there, and the shop manual explicitly says to leave it alone, which works fine.

    Here's what I got for my '13 PiP. It worked perfectly every time. And it works perfectly on my Prime.

    And I never messed with that tab thing people seem to get so worked up over.

    I'll check that out later. The cap might be tightened quite a bit, but the old one I used just slipped. I'm not sure if it's caused by different size or because it's too tight.

    I asked them. The staff isn't sure which one will definitely take it out. Since there's this COVID thing, they don't accept return. That's why I can't afford to get the wrong one.
