A whole lot of noise to wake the neighbors just to step out and get my paper

Yes is the best answer but a work-around is to "shut" the drivers door when exiting but don't "close" it.

By that I mean carefully push the door in till it latches but not enough that it activates/pushes in the door switch. This switch activation is the trigger for the "loud" warning chimes. One quickly develops the muscle memory to do this without much attention. This method does leave the cabin lights on (if not set to off) since the car still considers the door open.

If you think this warning chime is loud, then you should hear my C-Max which uses two horn honks as a warning notification. Now that's LOUD!

No - the 3 beeps come when you step out of the car with the FOB in your pocket. - check my POST #21.

That's not a normal procedure because you tried to exit with car in gear. This is not what the OP is doing.

Besides not completely closing the door, another work-around is to leave the FOB in the car. This is what my wife does (leaves purse) in a situation like the OP's. That method is more a PITA for me since I keep the FOB in my pocket so I just don't completely shut the door. I typically want to keep the interior cool/conditioned and don't have concerns with security; typical scenario: moving car out of garage then I remember I forgot something in the house.

This whole thread has been a FAQ for literally decades here on PC. :)

@fotomoto is correct. If you leave the car door ajar and step away from the car it does not beep. Checked it Saturday before I left to go to the grocery store. It does beep if you shut the door closed and walk away while the car is in Ready mode. Don’t know how much space the OP has between the door and where she goes to get her paper. She may have to shut the door to get by any pylons or curbs in the way.

No - look closer - I put it in "P" - at 11 seconds into the video. Opened the door, and as I got out, 3 beeps.

    This is an entertaining thread.
BOTH of my 2018 Prii: Stop car, put in P, leave ignition on, open door, NO BEEP, exit car with fob in pocket, still no beep. Close door, THREE BEEPS. In a parking lot, daylight hours, not very loud. At 5 am, between 2 brick walls, MUCH louder...HAHA!

alanclarkeau: Clearly this is a N vs. S hemisphere issue, as well as a L (correct!) vs. R (WRONG!) hand drive vehicle issue. I'm going to have to re-consider ALL of your previous advice based on these deficiencies.

Not entirely sure of which powered-up mode you are asking about, but just yesterday I left it powered, and the AC running, twice for needed travels (for me) while getting my dog out of the house (for his sanity). I left him in the car at work, and then at Trader Joe's, where the car idled and auto-AC'd the temperature for the doggo. Had to use the hard-key inside the key-fob to lock the car, then unlock it again at both places.

I haven't read the entire thread, so sorry if someone else has already mentioned this. But, if you're talking about the warning beep that occurs due to exiting the vehicle while it's in ready mode, or something similar, then most of these can be set at the dealership or via the Carista app and OBDII.

Specifically, here's a selection of some of the noise related items Carista can set, that I spotted in a quick glance when scrolling through the list, there may be more:

Ding when key is left in the car
    *ENABLED* / DISABLED

Ding when key is out of the car and ignition is on
    *YES* / NO

Beep when opening/closing windows with remote
    *YES* / NO

Warn (beep) when door can't be locked because it's still open
    *YES* / NO

Warn (beep) when door can't be locked because it's still open
    *YES* / NO

Warn (beep) when a window is still open when locking doors
    *YES* / NO

Warn (beep) when sunroof is still open when locking doors
    *YES* / NO

Ding when headlights are left on
    *YES* / NO

    Seat belt warning ding (driver)
    *ENABLED* / DISABLED

Seat belt warning ding (front passenger)
    *ENABLED* / DISABLED

Seat belt warning ding (rear passengers)
    *ENABLED* / DISABLED

    Turn signal click volume
    LOW / MEDIUM / *HIGH*

    Reverse-gear beep
*BEEP ONCE* / KEEP BEEPING WHILE IN REVERSE

Mute parking sensor when stationary for more than 3 sec.
    YES / *NO*

Lower parking sensor beep volume when stationary for more than 3 sec.
    DON'T CHANGE VOLUME / *1* / 2 / 3

Lower parking sensor beep volume when moving away from objects
    DON'T CHANGE VOLUME / *1* / 2 / 3

    Parking sensor beep volume
    1 / 2 / *3* / 4 / MAX

Need to order Carista, for 3 things:
    1) Adjust lane-change flashes to 4 from the default 3
    2) Turn off reverse-gear beep
    3) Enable key-fob access to windows up/down.

I should look deeper into it, though, so I can make as many changes as possible during the $9.99 "1-week pass" period.

When you activate the process in your car, it will step through each of the available options in turn. Don't over-analyze...

I'm surprised at the "Seat belt warning ding (driver) *ENABLED* / DISABLED. I thought that was required to get a 5 star Safety rating - and couldn't be turned off?

I agree, but I don't think unauthorised third-party tools that modify settings that are normally only accessible to the dealership really count?

Here in the UK, there are a bunch of reasons you might not wear a seatbelt and it be completely legal. UK law makes exceptions for emergency vehicles, delivery vehicles, and medical reasons. If the latter is a long term or permanent medical issue or disability, you can imagine you'd want the seatbelt warning disabled.

Over-analyzing isn't the issue, I simply meant I need to look closely at options. Do I really want/need to modify the parking sensor beep volume? etc. etc...
