As noted above, I use to support the ban on self serve gasoline in Oregon, actually enjoying the convenience of having an attendant to pump the gasoline.
But I have since changed my mind.
    Why?
Well with modern vehicles you are NOT suppose to top up. Plus, In fact, there's stickers all over most pumps in Oregon saying DO NOT TOP UP.
But I'm tired of the never ending battle with attendants that do NOT follow that rule.
I've caught attendants topping up my tank as much as $1.00+ more.
And I'm caught in this reality. If I politely ask the attendant before pumping the gas to NOT top it off? I get a snide, dirty look and the proclamation that they never top off the tanks.
If I don't say anything? They will almost always inevitably top off the tank.
So I've reached the point where I say....just let me do it myself.

Still the vast majority of Oregon is attendant based gas stations, I don't see this crisis really changing that reality any time soon.

Full serve gas is one of the awesome things about Oregon!

How can it be that stations can’t find attendants to hire when unemployment is about 30%?

While I don't agree with the awesome bit, the supposed lack of attendants to hire during surging unemployment is one of those 'say what?o_O" things.

I used to mock full-service gas states, then I moved to Jersey. Not having to get out in the cold or rain to pump my gas is great. Even though my local Costco gas station always has lines, they move cars through quickly.

The biggest trouble I have now is I keep forgetting where the button to release the gas lid cause I only fill up about every 4 months.

Having grown up with full-serve only in Oregon, of course I am used to it and love it.

Yes, sometimes I might have to wait a few extra minutes, but, meh, are we all that important and busy?

The only time I have issues is when I fill gasoline cans for our oil/gasoline saw mix. I might have a five gallon can, but I only want two gallons and I want two gallons. NOT 2.25 gallons, because it is a mix.

Usually I tell them it is a mix for our chainsaws two or three times before they start and it works out O.K. But, there are the situations when they ignore me and merrily go along putting in an extra gallon or so. That gasoline goes directly into the Subaru.

When I first moved here, I accidentally pumped my own a few times, and they didn’t really care. The attendants are usually really friendly and conscientious. It’s great when it’s cold or raining out.

the recent layoffs would rather collect unemployment than pump gas. i can't say that i blame them.

I do. I’d never take a handout if I have a chance to work.

There's mutterings about allowing self-serve gas in Coquitlam. Also...: they're not enforcing pay parking at local hospitals.

Is it a handout if you've paid into it?

If I accept unemployment, it will be only if I can’t find a job. That’s just how I am. I believe in these programs but I don’t believe in collecting benefits if you don’t need to.

Dealing with 100's of customers daily? No thanks. Make 'em self-serve asap, for both the motorists and the workers.

If your job no longer exists, does it matter?

Oregon's minimum wage is much higher than the federal minimum wage.
