Featured The Prius and F-150 parties

It's a narrative, written to polarize issues by leaving out important facts. In this case, you are lead to believe larger and more powerful hybrids don't exist. Notice no mention of anything other than Prius? It's what some publications do to draw attention to themselves. Their business (this opinion article especially) is to attract readers.

 

Did we read the same article? The one that said "There are hybrid models up and down the lineups of Toyota and Honda and other economy-minded marques, but also available from makers ranging from Jaguar to BMW to Porsche, which offered a monster hybrid supercar at a price of just under $1 million as well as hybrid versions of many of its less exotic vehicles. A great many things are up in the air right now for American businesses, but Ford is even planning to introduce a hybrid version of the F-150 ...." ?

Vague mention is a key tool in the arsenal to mislead. Reference to a broader scope without any detail whatsoever gives it the sense of credibility while avoiding interference with the narrative.

How is it misleading? The author's argument (and note to above commenter, "Kevin Williamson" is a he) is that the Prius is a good car (we know this because he writes, "The Prius is simply a terrific car") but has been a victim of its own success as hybrid technology has been mainstreamed across a variety of cars. That seems reasonable given the Prius' sales numbers in recent years vs. availability and sales of other vehicles like the RAV4 Hybrid, and I think all of us here agree that the Prius is a good car--otherwise we wouldn't have bought them. Do you disagree with those points? Why or why not? Is it possible you are simply reacting to the source without judging the author's arguments on their merits?

(N.B. I'm not conservative, but I agree with this author's assessment--I think the Prius is generally a good car, and yes, it has been a victim of its own success as shoppers have increasingly bought hybrid versions of conventional models instead of it).

 

Prii were flying off the showroom floors, but then gaso went from $4 to $2. Now we are going $2 to $1 gaso.
At the same time, stylistically Toyota elected to make Prius more sedan-like, but by then we had the emerging SUV centric market. Gotta say that blue Prii in the article pic is eye candy though.

 

Slap the RAV4 Prime drive train into the Prius Prime, call it the Prius Prime XSE and you have a performance AWD Prius. Might actually sell.

 

My studies indicate just changing the control laws to allow more power at the 0-40 mph range would be more than enough to give the Prius some scoot.

The other factor for Prius of course is that Toyota has made good on its promise to make hybrid versions of each car such as Camry and RAV4. So you can now get Prius in various skins, if you will. We just picked the RAV4 skin, but I think we might have gone with VenzaH had it been available,

 

I am living proof of one of the points the author made. If you look at my car when I go by it looks nothing like a Prius. If you read through the title the word "Prius" is nowhere to be found. If however you were to open up the car and look inside, it is just a Prius engine and drivetrain mounted in a bigger body. The car has all the technological advantages of a Prius.

The Prius forced a breakthrough in the evolution of the automobile. Since then has been speciating rapidly. If its descendants outstrip and eventually replace it, is that such a bad thing?

100% agreed. "Prius" the word is just branding. Those spacy liftback bodies were just ephemeral packaging. The real success was creating a legitimate hybrid powerplant, and scaling it through manufacturing and support across several continents, now in multiple strengths for a variety of auto types.

 

I like the way you think but the build platform can't handle the weight nor has the space for a larger, heavier pack.
