    Update 6 - 3/25/2020
COVID-19 still burning bright in the U.S. We might be seeing the first sign of NY actually "flattening the curve". I'd like to see at least a few more days of decreasing new cases before I'd say NY has hit the inflection point. However, I'm also concerned that any downward trend in the new cases may be due to fewer tests than fewer infections. My understanding is that NYC has started restricting COVID-19 testing to just hospitalized/those at high risk. I may switch to tracking COVID-19 deaths rather than cases, as that may be more accurate going forward.

I'm thinking of pulling something out of the old computer box and putting it back into service. Most of the contents are too old to matter but I think I have one quad xeon rig that has a little something left to give. At worst it would match what my laptop is doing.

Idle speculation but the effort against SARS-CoV-2 might lead to a cure for the common cold ... or at least more effective, focused treatments.

    Worldometer count, end-of-UTC-day Wednesday.

At this linear rate, the U.S. will easily overtake Italy in case count on Thursday, and maybe China too. Italy doesn't overtake China until Friday.

Both here and on Johns Hopkins, the U.S. has now exceeded 1000 deaths.

Idle@1067. Human immune system seems very complicated. Many have probably heard that 'too clean' childhoods may lead to allergies later. Those are over reactions and unwelcome, but far below a cytokine storm.

Suggesting that some amount of external poking at immune systems may help them respond evenly to real threats. Not ignore, and not burn the barn down.

Not convinced that we know enough about immune system to remove these things that exercise it.

OTOH I'm perfectly fine with extinctifying about 50 out of 3000 species of mosquitoes. They may have 'made sense' when free-ranging large herbivores far outnumbered humans. Now, they connect far too many human blood systems. Diseases that thumb a ride that way are having far too much success.

    Already have one...

Some of the history of using vitamin C to cure viruses, flu, pneumonia, and similar respiratory illnesses. Even a low dose like 200mg has reduced deaths by 80% from pneumonia.

Sorry, I forgot to include, "more effective than vitamin C."

Idle speculation but the effort against SARS-CoV-2 might lead to a cure for the common cold ... or at least more effective (smaller doses) than vitamin C, focused treatments.

Vitamin C is rather like an immune system all by itself. Vitamin D is food for your native immune system.

Here's a 20 minute video by a British doctor who's been reading the medical literature:

"Vitamin C is rather like an immune system all by itself." This is unfortunately untrue. It is an essential micronutrient with short residence time in vivo. If your diet does not supply 100-200 mg/day, supplement that. If you believe much more is much better, act accordingly.

There is no fixed amount of C that anyone should consume. Optimum usage would be the amount required to neutralize the current load of free radicals. 200 mg may be appropriate for someone in excellent health. That same person exposed to an illness like Covid-19 will do better with considerably more. Bowel tolerance is a technique for identifying the maximum amount of C you can consume orally at any specific time.

Dr. Cathcart told of his initial experience with C this way: he had no idea how much to take, so he took a teaspoon. His allergies went away for four hours, at which time he took another teaspoon. Then he caught a cold, and the C only worked for 2 hours. When the cold resolved, the teaspoon was again good for four hours. Many regular vitamin C users can feel how much they need, and vary the dose according to their symptoms.

He eventually learned to rate a cold/flu by how many grams of C were required per day to treat the symptoms. A 10 gram cold is noticeable, but not a wipeout. A 100 gram cold is a wipeout. More than that may require IV administration since it enables higher blood levels.

Most other mammals produce their own vitamin C, with the goat perhaps the most. It enables them to consume things that would make a human sick. Since humans lost the ability to convert glucose to C, we have to use our brain to control the C level. One target of genetic engineering is to restore the human ability to produce C.

Dr. Cathcart maintained that someone presenting at the emergency room with respiratory symptoms should immediately be put on vitamin C. When test results come back with a better description of what's going on, add/switch to the treatment appropriate to the test results. Using C doesn't preclude other treatments. But it is dirt cheap and many times sufficient. Bad news if you're selling expensive drugs.

Sorry, I shouldn't tease you. I'll just turn up the squelch. I'm following this thread for modern medicine and chemistry but there are excellent alternatives.

That would require me to understand anything that detailed medical research description said. ;) Once you choose the broad project, you are sent work from any of the researchers in it. There's a large list. I'm sorry I don't know the answer to your question.

That would do very good. I'm getting both GPU jobs and CPU jobs so the video card is cranking as well. Make sure your box has good air flow.

I've also been working on the BOINC based Rosetta@Home project which is also working on a different angle to COVID-19. (you can specifically choose the COVID-19 project)

Folding@Home models the process of protein folding. Rosetta@Home computes protein design and predicts the protein structure and how it docks/attaches/infects cells. Both are needed info.
