I understand the new food safety rules allow chicken processors to self-inspect 40 birds per minute per inspector, and that this is a substantial increase over the old standard which involved inspectors from the government.

Since people are driving less and less, harvesting roadkill is not a viable strategy for long term survivalists..

Story related by a family member

A friend was standing in a long line to buy cat food at a local Walmart, when a woman behind her asked why she was taking up space in line just to buy pet food.
"You [expletives deleted] are hoarding all of the people food, so I'm having to fatten up my cats so I can eat them!"
The woman's kids started crying and she had to leave the line.

Don't mess with a southern woman.

I just came from our favorite in state, family owned, 8 location grocery store, Crest Foods. It was amazing well stocked. Everything was full except for TP and large quantity paper towels but they had lots of single roll one per person size.

We're not on a statewide lock down, but a week ago Sunday, the mayor of OKC issued a city wide stay at home, close all schools, etc, except for grocery and takeout. So that's when our big run started. Now it's a week later and the supplies have recovered nicely.

One thing the Crest store owner did was to hire an additional 250 people to do just shelf stocking across 8 stores. At least that's an extra 250 people with jobs. The other local grocery stores also look well stocked including Homeland and the Walmart Neighborhood Market.

We are so freakin' spoiled in this country!!! All the whining about empty shelves; and I'm not just saying here -- it seems like it's everywhere. It's frustrating, all right. But you guys & gals need to go live in a third world country for a while. The picture posted by @frodoz737 in #226 is seriously heartbreaking. But it's also just a regular day in a lot of places. We never knew if they would have bread when we went to the store in Honduras. I'm not saying this is good, but it might be good for our perspective as a society and as individuals in the long run. Perhaps a little less feeling of entitlement? A little more kindness? I have noticed that people I encounter seem a little friendlier these days. Shared suffering builds bonds. Just my 2/100 of a dollar's worth. ;)

My grandfather used to tell me about the early 20th Century in Lithuania. The shelves were almost all empty. He had to go there early in the morning and wait in line all day for the truck to arrive. He didn't care about what they were bringing. He was thankful for getting something and bought all that he was allowed.

The spouse was in Cuba last month, and quickly learned that if one sees something in the store that may be wanted, grab it now. The sparse selection will be different tomorrow, or even later today.

That might be fine that there will be more supplies.

But, do you really want to go out when 88% of the population is infected?

I'm not cowering in the corner of some basement somewhere. I'm intelligent, I know how to read and follow the recommendations from the CDC and the health dept. There are times you have to have things.

I wasn't trying to stir up more FUD (fear uncertainty and doubt) with my post. I was trying to provide a bit of positive information when so many others are not. Nothing personal, but I don't do fear mongering.

There is effectively no food available for sale here. Saturday I was able to get a pound of deli ham and 4 bananas. Now to try to make that last a week.

Same with us. There were certain products that, even if we had some at home, when we saw it we bought it because we never knew how long it would be before we saw it again.

Wife placed a Walmart order to pick up today. No bread. At least we have flour & other ingredients to bake bread.
Last week Walmart & Sams Club did not have white flour.

I did that last week with toilet paper.

Better ½ has been way ahead of the curve since January, so we have enough flour, rice, beans, yeast bread, eggs etc to help our non proactive & old neifhbors - as well as family in other counties. Speaking of bread & eggs, if you have a freezer, bread lasts a long long time, & eggs? We still have our freeze dried /powdered eggs that we mix with the fresh ones, that the chickens & ducks provide over at the parents house, along with enough lugs of oranges to choke out all of our friends & neighbors.

    vitamin C - anybody?
Funny - the 'prepper' is no longer the oddball that people look at & roll their eyes.

Went to Sam's Club, today. Got two multi packs of Lance Nekot crackers. A whole pallet full was almost empty on a pallet truck.

Bread and flour shelves were empty at our local supermarket yesterday, but we are on a no-gluten diet. We have about a dozen eggs/day from our flock of chickens. We have half of cow and pig and some chicken meats in our freezer. We should be fine for a couple more weeks without replenishing most food items. The only concern would be running out of rice. I hope the weather warms up soon, so I can start gardening. Still in low teens in the morning, and we are expecting snow tonight.:(

Took one of the two rice boxes left today. There were 25 bags of it being loaded into the shelves but I figured that was a bit too much.
    Schools shut till mid May.

K-12 schools in Virginia are closed for the rest of the school year.
